Hunger in South Florida

CBS4 Miami News recently published a report on child hunger in the South Florida, Area Study: 30% Of South Florida Families Hungry. According to reliable sources, South Florida is 12th on the list of American areas with food shortage problems.  This brings the Global Food Crisis right to our own doorstep. Driving around Miami, one would never know the reality of poverty and inadequate food distribution in the "land of plenty." With shiny new cars, miles and miles of restaurants, it's inconceivable that many urbanized families are struggling to put food on the table. One group of students from Miami Dade College are helping in Overtown, a historically economic  no man's land. The old saying is to start in your own backyard. As World Environment Day (June 5, 2013) approaches, the Miami Community should be exploring ways that we can 'distribute' the vast resources we have here in the Magic City. Where do we start? Can we do enough?

  1. Not too long ago, I was watching the Food Network channel, and there was this show about how chefs had to prepare dinner with whatever was going to be thrown out by the distributors...incredible. I felt like not shopping again.

    1. Between now and tomorrow morning, 40,000 children will starve to death. The day after tomorrow, 40,000 more children will die, and so on throughout 1992. In a "world of plenty," the number of human beings dying or suffering from hunger, malnutrition, and hunger-related diseases is staggering. According to the World Bank, over 1 billion people—at least one quarter of the world's population—live in poverty. Over half of these people live in South Asia; most of the remainder in sub-Saharan Africa and East Asia.

    2. Now days the hunger in the world is being increasing causing the death in kids. The number of hunger in the world is a problem that is affecting everybody. Have you ask yourself how many homeless are in South Florida?, there are a lot of homeless that even thought the government give them some help they still sufferer of hunger. There are so many ways to help these people in our countries. For example, we can donate something to the different foundations that are asking everyday for money something small make a different and can help 50% for our society. Finally, we have to support all these people to make a better world together with less of hunger.

    3. That sounds something like Iron Chef, they do not know what they are going to be making until the last min and they need to come up a different kinds of foods. i could be wrong but i think instead of spending money on all these shows they should donate that mooney or have funds ofr places that have starving people. sometimes its a little upsetting like, having money to build stadiums but not for other more important causes! in my opinion most people dont really care about the world cause they either dont go through those issues or they dont see whats going on.

    4. It is very appalling to hear that restaurants are willing to let their leftovers be disposed instead of giving them away, since they're not going to be of any use to them. What is so difficult about driving to a food bank or even stepping outside the confines of their establishment to see if someone in need cares for a decent meal? Fortunately enough, I recently read an article where the Sun Sentinel is reporting that more Florida restaurants are donating their food to soup kitchens. Thanks to organizations like the United Way and Feeding South Florida, businesses now have their leftovers picked up. I believe that we as consumers should support businesses like Starbucks, Chipotle, and the Cheesecake Factory who are supporting the needy. We should use the power of the public voice to start a petition in order to propose legislation demanding restaurants to donate their leftover food to the homeless.

    6. Fortunately, some organizations like Feeding South Florida are helping hungry people to fulfill their food needs. Feeding South Florida was founded in 1981 with the mission of assisting people in need, and improves their lives. They accomplish their goals by providing food and other grocery products, and by educating and involving our community to fight starvation and poverty. Feeding South Florida provided over 30 millions pounds of food in 2012 to approximately 600 member agencies throughout Miami-Dade, Broward, Palm Beach, and Monroe Counties. Feeding South Florida is a non-profit organization which works through nearly 600 other non-profit organizations. They attempt to support children, elder, disabled, and poor people.

    7. Hunger is not a local issue that affects only our country. Many countries around the world are facing the same situation. There are many factors that have raised this dilemma. The main reasons to this issue are climate variations, war and global conflicts, population growth, and poverty. Weather and climate changes are an important factor that generates hungry. Natural disasters cause significant and negative repercussion on the outcomes of productive land. Problems such as inundations, droughts, and tropical storms, can be unforeseeable and catastrophic. When natural catastrophes destroy the soil, their sources of food are washed away with them. War and global conflicts also increase hungry. Most of the countries devastated by hunger are those which are facing armed conflicts. It is too hard to maintain a stable food system when a country is facing stress due to violence and struggles. In many cases, families whose lives have been affected by war will cope with a sudden decrease in both, earnings and access to food. Population increase is the third factor that impact hunger. As the population goes up, demand for food increases either. It is becoming more and more difficult to balance comestible production rates with population growth rates. Poverty is another element that causes hunger. In most cases, hunger and poverty go together. As families fall into poverty, they are compelled to adjust their low income and reduce their budget to get comestibles.

    9. It is a great idea to have a World Hunger Event Day at the campus because students will then educate themselves accordingly about this worldwide issue. This national event can remove the blindfold most people have regarding this world dilemma. This information may also be shared with friends and family across the border.

    10. I agree with u Ana, It's incredible the magnitude that it has taken this problem, especially in South Florida. It's hard to think that in a country as powerful as the United States many homeless stop at the traffic lights for food or for a few cents to buy something to eat, I keep looking through my car window while I gave a dollar, and the homeless with the sunburned face and sad eyes, in gratitude...,just smile and said "God Bless You"...if I could help all of them I would do it, because hunger is one of the worst things that a human being can endure. Around one billion people are dying for an advance and intense malnourishment, not only in undeveloped countries like Uganda, Ethiopia or Peru in South America, there is also hunger in developed countries, like ours, perhaps on a smaller scale or more controlled, but it exists, and it is a fact that today we are facing worldwide. But we don’t have to look further to see by ourselves the evil face of famine when the problem is right under our noses. Hunger remains unseen, barely, if we only turn to gaze and take notice, right now in our community, just seconds from the warmth of our homes.

    11. The principal cause that helps combat the hungry is eradicate poverty in the world. Especially in third world countries, people live without access to basic daily conditions such as water, house, education, adequate food, and clothing. Likewise, poor countries are victims of inequality, lack of access to health, victims of illiteracy, and widespread insecurity in the market job. Many of this countries face endemic problems with infertile soil that worse their poverty making their lands impossible to cultivate. Also, some of them have a high external debt which will continue because whatever they generate must be use it to pay their due. Poverty may increase as a result of the global crisis. To prevent this happened it is essential that governments invest primarily in agriculture to improve this sector. Another goal to eradicate poverty it is making a universal primary education. The lack of education is proportional to the level of family poverty affecting those with less income. Also, it is important the equality between men and women as a human right that should be a goal to all life activities. Others goals should be the reduction of death in children under five years, improve maternal health, and fight disease. It should be a priority for all countries eradicates the poverty in the world to prevent the death of many innocents.

    12. . At this time, finding work is a difficult task, so many people are unemployed and the cost of living higher. Many families are forced to decide between food and other unexpected events, such as a car repair, or an emergency room visit, expensive medicines, or in the worst case a job loss. Even when we try to spend the same amount of money every month, it is normal to find unexpected situations. Many people are concerned about the future in this country. They have seen how high prices are affecting their budgets.

Having sources to feed every person, yet there is a fight against hunger. It is a challenge that is continuosly generating new ideas and campaings to support and release this issue trough out yhe years.Although there are a lot of organizations that support world hunger, governments have the most important role to make a difference.Individuals must have equal oportunities, and access to land working and food should have accessible and low prices. There must be a balance that erradicates world hunger.

    14. I work in a building that has its own cafeteria and everyday after the lunch rush the food that doesn't get eaten gets taken to a shelter. While there its given to homeless or taken to a soup kitchen. Looking at how this world is turning out to be where its OK to throw away what you don't eat. When did it become ok to just throw away hundreds of dollars worth of food away and not even care. I've seen restaurants all over the city just dump bags and bags of spoiled food out into the trash just because they left it out and it went bad. Since when did it become ok to see a child hungry and not take that time to make sure he/she is fed. In third world countries where the homeless rate and hunger in children rate is higher, you wont see what you see here.

    15. Yes, I remember seeing this too. It's incredible how much food is wasted. All of the food wasted, would feed almost the whole world. But not even us, the human beings, the people, but also animals like cats, and dogs, with no food and shelter.Even though it may be disgusting for some people, I don't think is a bad idea. If I would be on the streets, with no food, I would do something like that.

    16. I totally agree with this post. It is a shame how people waste food while others do not have any, especially in this country, where exist everything in big amount, some people buy food just to have their refrigerator full, but that's not the bad part, the bad part is after they buy the food and they do not use it. When this things happen in some homes in U.S. another homes around the world are fighting to get something for their relatives.

    1. Churches would definitely be willing to contribute to a cause such as feeding the needy in our community. Many churches already go out and seek to help criminals, prostitutes, etc. so it would be a great idea to recruit them and inform them of how important it is for us to extend our hand to the needy.

      Delete
    2. Churches are called to play a significant role helping people in need. Our country is a very sensitive nation, and churches in the United States are willing to work together in order to improve poor people's lives around the world. For instance, the Presbyterian Hunger Program (PHP) is a ministry of the Presbyterian Church in United States performing a great work while working with congregations and partners around the globe. They attempt to mitigate hunger and get rid of its causes. PHP stimulates families, individuals, and church groups to appraise their actual needs in order to share what they have with those less fortunate.
Another example is UMCOR World Hunger/Poverty. This is a program from the Methodist Church, which not only supplies food for hungry people, but also helps poor countries move forward with development. This program brings together both, immediate crisis help by providing food, medicines and clothing; and long-term alternatives such as water purification, immunizations, etc.

    5. Churches do help out society because they give out food to the needy to a certain extent. The thing that I can’t stand about churches is that they only give to their own. Churches only help out those who are needy that are of their same religion. It’s shameful that there still is favoritism among the churches in such an advance era we are today; the 21th century. Today’s churches still carry the similar views to those churches from 500 years ago; “If you’re not part of our religion, then you die”. You’d have to convert into a religion just to receive any sort of help. You have to give up your beliefs and become oppressed just to be able to eat another day. That doesn’t sound right!
The problem is that churches are supposed to receive anyone, they aren’t supposed to be judgmental, but they end up contradicting what they preach. A church preaches about kindness and sympathy and they do much more than the opposite. Churches reflect the void feelings of empathy and kindness that society lacks. It is unfortunate that we see our priest, our pastors as role models, and we even seek guidance from them. Churches represent the narcissism and ethnocentrism of society in general.
I also have to give another piece of my mind to church administration. These people seem to have taken the “sanctity” of a church and turned it into a lucrative business. You see it all the time during mass when they mention something around the lines of: “Donate to the church, donate to your god; if you don’t you are sinners”! Then you see your priest with the latest brand of Mercedes Benz, much better car than anything you can afford right. Now, I do believe that a service should be paid, our priest and pastors should get a reasonable wage for brainwashing the masses, but as I just said reasonable. There is no reason why a priest should get paid enough to purchase anything near a Mercedes Benz. Instead, money given by the constituents of a church should be used for the improvements of the church and the rest on helping out to the needy equally and to their fullest extent.

  3. I think it is time we really get into the practice of sustainability. It is time to integrate environmental awareness and responsibility through out the community. The food industry is well known for the large amounts of wasted food it creates. Hotels in Las Vegas have partnered up with local farms and have begun sustainable projects in which all of the food wastes from the hotel's buffets are used as feed for the pigs in these farms. They have found a way to utilize over 8,000 lbs of food waste per day (that would other wise be sent to a land fill) to feed the pigs in these neighboring farms. This is only one hotel that I know of that has found a way to not only manage but recycle their wastes. It is time our community starts putting together sustainable projects like this innovative project that the MGM Grand in Las Vegas has found.

  4. In Miami there are many homeless, poor and a huge waste of food from restaurants, hotels and supermarkets. Unfortunately, the law limits both giver and those who receive food. This limitation can not be a pretext to deny a family or anyone to get some food. It is horrible that large amounts of food in excellent condition are thrown away. We'll be sorry for this in the near future?. While thousands right now in countries like Africa want those foods that are thrown here. In New York, there are hotels and restaurants in the late afternoon and take all foods packaged and clean vegetables were not consumed during the day and are distributed to households. In the world we are all needed because each individual is part of the life cycle. Miami Beach has a high number of people without food and sleeping to the parks. A group of volunteers every evening bring food to these people. These foods are donated by people who have their business meals or donations from others. Everyone can make a difference just need willpower.

    1. We have become a selfish society,"I don't have time", we are always running; we don't stop to visit family or friends, let along take the time to volunteer and help those less fortunate.
Should we include a routine and make part of our busy schedule to maybe go around to the nearby restaurants, and ask for a way to distribute their leftovers and getting them to where they need to go. That would be a good starting point, I think

      Delete
    2. Yes! The law plays a large part in the mis allocation of food throughout the community. It is unfortunate that we live in a litigious society. A big reason that corporations can not just give away food that is not utilized is that the receiver (however needy) can bring legal charges against the provider if he or she decides to.

Also the scarcity of food in South Florida is the base of the problems of hungers no because we do not have food is being a problem just because people can not afford it. The food in South Florida because of the economy problems is causing more poverty because the food now is more expensive and there are many people that can not have a success nutrition.Clearly, the country have to work about this issue.

    4. Approximately one in five children in America, which means sixteen millions, lives in households that strive to place something to eat on the table. Nearly sixty-two percent of American teachers see children who come to school facing starvation because they are not getting enough comestibles at home. Even though America has been recognized as the land of plenty, one in six people in the United States faces hunger. Many people think that the problems related to hunger belong to small pockets of society, or some specific areas of the countries, but the reality is very different. At this time, millions of Americans are struggling facing hunger and poverty.

    5. The goal is to reduce world hunger not just in a state, country, or place but worldwide. It is important to reduce these statistics. The more we are knowledgeable about the subject, the more we can help. Supermarkets and grocery stores can also help by sharing with the homeless, or collaborating with charities that stress the significance of helping those that are in need.

    6. Sometimes I look at some students in the campus or other places, how they fill the tray of food that maybe they are not going to eat it all, and later they waste the food, while in countries like Africa or Somalia, there are people begging for food or dying from a terrible famine every day. We must be aware of this reality and face the problem with practical solutions; it is more important to stimulate local production that meets its shortage with foreign food aid.
For most people, the representation of famine is that of a tiny, obviously anorexic child, with an enlarged stomach and protuberant eyes dreadfully suffering his enigmatic destiny in a securely faraway land. Entire groups are doomed to perish in the degradation. This problem, sadly, is recurrent in the progress of history, but there is conscience, more than in the old days, that hunger constitutes an atrocity

    9. It has become apparent to me that Miami is one of the most selfish cities in the whole country. If you take a moment and look around at others cities like New York, California, Colorado. What do these cities have in common well they have specific programs that encourage restaurants to donate their left over food to the homeless or low income families. Miami you see volunteers that donate their time and their own money to help out. What about the fancy restaurants that make thousands a night? you wont see them donating their precious food to the homeless. In my opinion they must believe that their left over food is better off in the trash than in the hands of a child who hasnt eaten in several days, or a man that hasnt eaten in a week.

      Delete
    10. Well I did not know about this specific program that those cities have to encourage restaurants to donate their left over food to the homeless or low income families. Unfortunately, it is true, our city, Miami is very selfish in that way. I can say and give proof of it because I used to work for fancy restaurants, which in,nobody is allowed to eat their food if you do not pay for it, they rather throw away than even give it to their employees so less to somebody else from the street.

  5. The magnificent program implemented in Vegas is a good way to use leftovers. While tons of food is broken causing environmental damage, they should be utilized properly. Many foods and plants serve as fertilizer for crops and to generate electricity, so it would be nice to see how everything was useful remote time in the community. Miami is not just beach, shopping, and entertainment area is also a city of people in need.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. Yes. Vegas is truly working to make good use of the leftover as the high prices of food in the international world market has increased and it is actually the main cause, however the causes the provoke world hunger are numerous and complex: unjust political commerce, poverty, lack of good water, discrimination against women, natural disasers, violence and armed conflicts or pandemias, just to name a few. In the last twenty years the fluctuations in the price of food has become an main key of hunger. Many of the grand food crisis of Africa have been produced in the context of markets well supplied among those poorer that did not have how to pay the high prices of the food during the periods of scarcity, among the crops. Poverty in itself cannot explain the hunger, but it affects the access to food of the more vulnerable countries. The majority of the 1,000+ millions of people threatened by hunger live in situations of extreme poverty, in other words, with less than one dollar per day: with this amount of earning money one cannot have access for available foods in the market or to productive resources as grounds to plant on or water. Poverty feeds the hunger but also the opposite, the malnutrition decrases the physical and intellecutal development of men, women, children and with that their productive capacity.

    1. In my personal opinion there are ways to finish with this problem that affect our country. We can do community hours in our neighborhood looking for people that have experience hunger in their lives. We can do fairs organizations with kids to give then free food an snacks. Also, we can do some activities to make them happy. Therefore, here our President Obama has an organization for all of these people that need help to survive.

    2. It is truth that here in South Florida there are a lot of homeless and people sick because of the hunger. But there are also so many institution that are working to help people that cannot afford food. An actual example of these institution and campaigns is the one that Michelle Obama's the first lady make in schools and towns that have this problem happening. She is helping a lot of people with this program that is base on health nutrition on kids that are the most affecting when it comes to hunger and malnutrition. This activity is a creation that is being helping our city very well. Michelle is focusing in a better future where people do not suffer or carving for food. All our bodies need food to success and be energetic during the days to do the daily activities. We as a community can support this programs and others. Together we can achieve a south Florida without hungers.

    3. There are approximately one million persons in South Florida who battle every day to put any kind of aliment on their dinner table. For one of every four infants going to bed without eating, school food is their only meal of the day.
How can that be possible in this society? The most powerful of the world, it is truly outrageous that in this prosperous community, hard-working families who often work two or more jobs, counting every penny, living payroll to payroll, striving daily to supply food for their families. And yet some people think that hunger in this nation is a utopia. A new research request that nearly 30 percent of all Floridian families with children are going starvation, finding themselves without the necessary money and looking for alternative ways to buy food to spend the last 12 months. The statistics place South Florida in 12th place on a nationwide listing as the worst food shortage area. The numbers request to show that South Florida has an elevated percentage of citizens who can’t stand to purchase all the food they need.

    4. I think it is important do not waste food where in Florida many children are angry. For that reason it is necessary to improve the food distribution.

      Delete
    5. Yes that's right, and effects are equality evident. Each time more people are eating cheaper food and food less nutritious. Food insecurity in children is particularly worrying. They are likely to get sick more often, develop diabetes, cognitive delays and psychological problems. Also, life expectancy is lower than before. People are living less than they should, and new diseases have been discovered related to poor eating habits. As we know healthy food is more expensive, but it is more recommended by specialists. They say that the better you eat, the better it will be for your health. Healthy food helps us to get a better immunological system and a higher life expectancy.

  7. I think that food waste is a question of morality, so another way that could be explores in order to distribute vast resources of food is with a moral compromise of the biggest centers of food consumption. Example, places like Publix, and Winn-Dixie that have a Dali should keep that food they will not use and send it to the distribution center

    1. What is clear is that there is no simple macro-economic recipe for addressing hunger and malnutrition. What best practices show is that hunger hinges on cross-cutting, distributional factors which are as much about access and social inclusion as they are about economics.

This is why cities and provinces can succeed in reducing hunger while a country fails, and why a country can make progress while the rest of a region continues to struggle. We must therefore understand hunger as the highly political question that it is – political in the sense that the mechanisms of participation and accountability that engage people with political processes are the very same things that provide a buffer against the social marginalisation at the heart of hunger.

    2. It is clear that the U.S. government might learn a lesson from its neighbor to the south, rather than interfering with the Cubans’ right to determine their own history. Since the U.S. in particular has a Gross Domestic Product of $15 trillion annually and a population of 311 million people, it is worth noting that, as of 2010, nearly one third of the population live in homes that experience hunger. Not only this, but 22% of the children in the U.S. live in poverty. Overall, 14% of the population lives in poverty. This has been on a steady increase since the year 2000. This statics are from the United States report about poverty and malnutritions that are causes of hunger.

    4. If you could believe I've read in newspaper articles that Publix is actually one of the big corporations that actually donates their left over meats, dairy and packaged foods to homeless shelters. Unlike others companies that just feel like they have to donate only during the holiday season where they are basically being forced into donating. if you were to work for one of these selfish corporations that rather let the food get destroyed instead of it being given to someone who might need it more, then i have a suggestion start a campaign where you can actually petition to the companies operations and human resources. Thats how it got started at Publix and at several other big wig corporations. In the issue of the poverty the US does have its economical problems right now, but there is still money being passed around. if the poverty rate was so bad do you think that most of these fancy pants restaurants still be in business? Where one plate of food costs as much as my car payment?? the problems is the following no one wants to hire, thus making it harder for families to make it through these hard times.

This place is in the Grove on Grand Avenue and 37th Avenue and it is sponsored by St. Hugh Catholic Church. We mainly suppotrt it by Parishioner's contributions and purchasing food from the food bank whiand donations from these stores, it gets distributed on Saturday mornings 6 am until we ran out of food. Publix and Winn Dixie help us with food that has but a few days before they expire so needy people benefit from that and it is with great honor that I have been doing this [although it's not easy getting up Saturday mornings so early]. I have also been in their shoes and it is very sad when one has a family and is limited in the amount of food one can provide for them.

  10. Child Hunger is a devastating reality across the world and even here in our own "backyard". It’s true one group can not reach everyone in need therefore we need to start small, "One small step for man, one giant leap for mankind." If everyone does a little we can accomplish a lot. While riding the bus on your way to work this morning you probably didn't think the family you sat next to will go hungry today, but the sad truth is they will because they are part of the 30% of South Florida families who battle hunger everyday. Part of the problem is not knowing the statistics. The more we know, the more we can help. More advertisements should be shown stating these facts and big name companies who distribute food locally should provide more donations when they can. For example, many grocery stores and restaurants throw out plenty of perfectly good food daily. This should be set aside for the hungry as Panara does with heir daily bread. While I was leaving Target the other a day, a homeless man had a sign that read “I eat cat food” I went home and I made him a meal. It didn't cost me much but to him it meant everything. We all need to give.

I agree with Amber because , If we everyone does a little we can really make a difference and seeing our people suffer from hunger should be something we all get involve .The more we are inform about things the more we can make a difference , to our society we need to be well educated by everything around us . By us volunteering to help others it won’t take so much it just takes a little, by what you did Amber that's amazing it just really take is a little love to our people.

    2. We need to increase the word of helping those who are less fortunate. Also, children are the most visible victims of under nutrition. Children who are poorly nourished suffer up to 160 days of illness each year. Poor nutrition plays a role in at least half of the 10.9 million child deaths each year five million deaths. We must do something to stop this number from increasing. The main goal should be to stop starvation and help everyone who needs food.

    3. Can someone explain to me, why the cooperation among us is not on the same level as the cooperation with our neighbors? .Our state has led the fight to provide assistance to our neighbors in need. We have an unmatched ability, efficiently in gather and distribute additional food resources. We need to raise awareness about the hunger problem in our community.
Thousands of people within our community go to bed without eating. They might have lost their jobs and may don’t have enough money to put food in the fridge, and others are homeless looking for a way out of poverty. We can assist them through donations of food and personal items to supplement their low incomes. The most vulnerable ones are the elderly and children.

    4. I agree with Amber here. what you did not alot of people would do for their own families (I've seen it). i have seen homeless out on the street with those signs saying "im homeless please help" or "will work for food" and even one that said "im homeless because of drugs please help". when i see these people out in the street i always ask if they are able to work, and of course some act crazy and others actually say yes and they want to work. i buy them lunch and try to help them look for a job. In that process i have actually come across a group of people that train and hire homeless individuals. That's the kind of things that will make this world a more tolerable place

  11. It's true what Amber says about us there are families in difficult situations. All we close the door of our homes without thinking what the neighbors are living at the time. Many families are experiencing severe financial problems. There are many parents unemployed or with health problems who can not work. Children are the most affected and the young who do not want to study because such situations at home. Making a difference is to support centers that help families in difficult situations. Everyone can donate something even our time.

    1. The hunger make the malnutrition in people and there are two basic types of malnutrition. The first and most important is protein-energy malnutrition--the lack of enough protein (from meat and other sources) and food that provides energy (measured in calories) which all of the basic food groups provide. This is the type of malnutrition that is referred to when world hunger is discussed. The second type of malnutrition, also very important, is micronutrient (vitamin and mineral) deficiency. This is not the type of malnutrition that is referred to when world hunger is discussed, though it is certainly very important.

    1. It is important to have organizations that are concerned about food supply. Aid should be technical support and use of land resources. Teaching to improve the conditions of a community is of great help for the future of people.

    2. Finding new and innovative ways to utilize our resources could be the answer to this problem. We are a nation of waste. Take for example the tons of waste we create with only the packaging of food and other materials. We are using up land resources to build and make more garbage. Our future depends on utilizing our resources for a greater good.

    3. I agree with you, Maria, as you said "we are a nation of waste and we need to find new ways to utilize our resources". The perfectly good food thrown out at grocery stores and restaurants have spawned a generation of "dumpster divers" who solely live on what they pick out of dumpsters. Food is still packaged and most all is fresh. These people do it not because they are poor but because it's free food that otherwise would have been wasted.

    6. Unfortunately, the causes of hunger, among many are natural disasters, poverty conflicts and yes, lack of agricultural infrastructure and also the over-exploitation of the environment, the rising of food prices in the international markets has been the principal cause of this increase. However, the main causes which provoke hunger in general, are numerous and complex. There are programs which try to combat this problem as the World Food Program, which is a very important organization and with many members through and around the globe. This organization's main objective five points which are: save lives and protect the subexistence environments during emergencies, prevent sharp hunger and invest in preparation measures for catastropic cases and their mitigation effects, reconstruct communities and re-establish means of subsistence after a conflict or a catastrophe or in situations of transition, reduce hunger and malnutrition and strenghten countries to reduce hunger. Hunger which is faced each day by more then 870 million people, it is not a fatality in which a big part of humankind is predisposed. It is unfortunately a result of injustice, of violation to human fundamental right of all persons to have available, each moment of quality and enough food which allows us to live a dignified and healthy life.

  13. I think that food wasting is one of the greatest problems we do have today's in days. It is fundamental to put a stop to all those people who has wasting thoughts. Recent studies show how millions of children go to bed hungry every day. It is sad that this happens, when there are malls, supermarkets and restaurants wasting food daily, which is a good condition. “We can make the difference." For instance, we can go to our nearest church and carry some cereal, bread, milk among other things. If, we want we can always have a bit leftover, and that is exactly what we need.

    1. I agree with you Patricia. This country has not only shopping centers, restaurants, supermarkets, etc. that can provide food to people in need, but also this country has the resources to ensure that nobody go hungry, especially children. Therefore, this is a matter of humanity and try to collaborate people who are in a position to help even with a bit. Additionally, there are organizations such as Feeding South Florida associated with other nonprofit organizations that provide meals to families of limited economic resources. The idea is to show solidarity with those human beings, especially with those that they have children.

    2. I agree with you as well with the fact that every day there is food that is being wasted . When I go to the super market I notice that they sell food in such large portions that people end up not consuming all of the food and just throwing the rest away. The same goes for restaurants , restaurants end up just disposing the food that they do not sell that day. It would be grate if people donated caned goods or fruits and vegetables that they not consume to local churches. Restaurants should box up the food that they throw away and instead donate it to a church or organization that can give it to someone that is in need and going hungry.

    3. i agree with Alba. many restaurant at the end of the night end up disposing the food the clients did not consume and it ends up in the trash. on the other hand, i know a restaurant that actually donates the food they have at the end of the night to a church that takes care of giving it to the homeless people that do not have a plate of food to put in their stomach. but I am sure it is not enough with only one restaurant donating.

    4. I agree with Karina, many organizations are playing an important role in helping hungry people. Fortunately these organizations are working not only in our county, but around the world. For example, THP Epicenter Food Banks provide a repository for excessive harvest and guarantee the food preservation during off-seasons. In 2010, community members stocked 482,040 kilograms of grains in food banks. In India, the government is in the process of pass a food security act that would supply comestibles for approximately 70 % of the inhabitants, especially targeting the poor. The World Food Programme operates in 74 countries, and it is the world’s largest humanitarian organization fighting hunger. These are only few examples of our world‘s efforts to fight hunger. However, there is no single alternative to end the world’ hunger. Every one can contribute to decrease this hurting dilemma. We can become volunteers helping hungry people to satisfy their starvation through our donations.

Through this program many people receive money to buy food every month coming to be of a vital help to many families around the country. This benefit is available for all people with a low-income. Another helpful way is the school lunch and breakfast program providing free meals to children with low income. Similarly, WIC program is special supplement nutrition from women, infants, and children during their first five years of life. In this amazing program mothers are receiving package of food during their nursing time. Also mothers are trained to feed babies, and how introduce different kind of food and the best way to do it. This program is very effective because they are working with doctor’s reports, so they know how children are developing their hemoglobin, height and weight. In addition, some people are also benefits with additional cash supplement, in this case are single mothers or disabled people.

  16. Today poverty and hunger have become a difficult problem to combat. Many people around the world do not have the resources to support their families and others do not have such resources living in an extreme poverty. Countries as Africa, Haiti are serious examples where people mostly children die every day from hunger and malnutrition. However, Florida, one of the states most coveted of American by migrants who often go in search of the great American dream, currently; it is also being affected by this terrible evil. A few days ago, I read news where it said that there are nearly a million people in South Florida who struggle every day to bring food to their homes. As well as, one in four children go to bed hungry where their only food is the food they receive in their schools. On the other hand, there are single mothers who work in public hospitals, they often have to eat the scraps left by their patients because they cannot afford the buy lunch. Oddly enough, these and many other cases are living in South Florida currently, unfortunately, most people ignore this situation. It is incredible that in this wealthy community where people usually tend to have two jobs are suffering through a crisis economic where they don’t have to eat. However, there is hope because we have the resources to help people who are going through these needs only is matter of pure humanity and lend a hand to our fellow.

This point should not be taken as something religious or political. It's time to rethink what is the economic support of a family nucleus. Children are suffering the most. It's not fair that a poor family has more children than they can not sustain. The average number of children in the household are three to seven children. What if it is a reality right now is that millions of people need our solidarity.

This is not the type of malnutrition that is referred to when world hunger is discussed, though it is certainly very important. Recently there has also been a move to include obesity as a third form of malnutrition. Considering obesity as malnutrition expands the previous usual meaning of the term which referred to poor nutrition due to lack of food inputs. It is poor nutrition, but it is certainly not typically due to a lack of calories, but rather too many although poor food choices, often due to poverty, are part of the problem. Obesity will not be considered here, although obesity is certainly a health problem and is increasingly considered as a type of malnutrition.

    1. These two types of definition of malnutrition are very interesting. If a child does not have a balanced diet from the womb of the mother then you can in a high percentage are doomed to get sick or die. Your score is important about obesity. Many people may think that's not the subject we are dealing, but this has the same nutritional deficiencies. If malnutrition is lack, obesity is the imbalance of nutrientres. The truth of this is that parents should be very careful when trying to have children. They are a great responsibility that require maturity and the ability of parents to care for them.

      Delete
    2. Each form of malnutrition depends on what nutrients are missing in the diet, for how long and at what age. The most basic kind is called protein energy malnutrition . It results from a diet lacking in energy and protein because of a deficit in all major macronutrients, such as carbohydrates, fats and proteins. Maras us is caused by a lack of protein and energy with sufferers appearing skeletally thin. In extreme cases, it can lead to kwashiorkor, in which malnutrition causes swelling including a so-called 'moon face'. Other forms of malnutrition are less visible - but no less deadly. They are usually the result of vitamin and mineral deficiencies micronutrients, which can lead to anemia, scurvy, pellagra, beriberi and exophthalmia and, ultimately, death.

      Delete
    3. You make an excellent point, and i like the way you explained the difference between malnutrition and deficiencies, although they go hand on hand, is worth noting the difference. Now obesity in the other hand, which is far more common these days, I strongly believe that poverty carries a great deal of weight. a regular family with low income and a lot of children, has the need to feed them all, therefore, what they can afford has to be sufficient to feed all those hungry mouths, and unfortunately, only junk food is within reach...sad, really sad

      Delete
    4. You're right Gladys; due to lack of economy their diet is inadequate as consequences they are suffering from diseases, which in short or long terms are more costly to treat. The most vulnerable are children who need a balanced feeding for their physical and intellectual development. That's why today the campaigns against junk food are increased, demanding better quality of food. One example is the Health Campaigns and Nutrition for Michelle Obama, base on physical activity and nutrition in order to reduce obesity population, especially in children. According to statistics of US Department of Health, in 1991, four states had obesity rate greater than 15 percent and in 2001, only one state had an obesity rate below 15 percent. The numbers are staggering, so we have to distribute and share as much information as possible about an adequate nutrition and the benefits for our health.

  18. World Hunger is everywhere and I was not surprised that there are people in Miami that are going hungry. When I drive around Miami I come to notice that there are a lot of homeless people that are starving and do not have money to buy food. These homeless people should be picked up and taken to a shelter where they can be provided with food . That is something that we can do to start lowering the percentage of hunger in Miami. Of course homeless people aren’t the only ones that are suffering from hunger. In more urban areas of Miami where they are populated by people that do not earn enough money to put a hot meal on the table every night or even have enough food for their families every day those people are suffering from hunger too. I think that we should inform more citizens about starting in our own backyards and growing their own crops . This is a cheaper alternative way to lower the percentage of hunger. Growing our own crops can also lower our carbon foot print since the food will be grown locally . This is the best way because we will be taking care of two issues them being lowering our percentage of hunger and lowering our percentage of the carbon footprint . This is great for our environment.

    3. I agree with you Lien, the economy is something that is related with famine, the unemployment rate in Florida continues to rise, when a family falls into poorness, they are obligated to extend the limited income. As more money is disbursed on food, less money is attainable to spend on healthcare, thriftiness and enlightenment.
Furthermore, the introduction of new technologies, especially agricultural, in countries undergoing the process of development in order to exploit natural resources to the maximum; to harvest and produce more according to their characteristics and needs. Also, the population expansion has struck developing countries really hard. Compounded with increasing food prices, it’s becoming progressively more complex to combine food production fares with dweller's growth fares; that's why developed countries like Japan, or China in some regions faced hunger because the population has increased by a higher percentage.
World hunger is a menace not only to the lives of people, but also for their pride. An acute and sustained shortage of food causes the body's spoilage, disinterest, loss of convivial respect, apathy and sometimes even savagery towards the feeble, especially infants and the elderly. Entire groups are doomed to perish in the degradation. This problem, sadly, is recurrent in the progress of history, but there is conscience, more than in the old days, that hunger constitutes an atrocity.

  19. First, we have to change our laws and how we act. I know for a fact that many restaurants and markets throw most of their food away instead of donating it. They do this because donating it might become a liability if someone gets sick from the food. Unfortunately there are some people that are taking advantage of this and scamming the businesses with lawsuits in order to make a quick buck. This in turn is not fair for the ones in need that are truly hungry and are struggling to place food in their table or the homeless. It’ is like the saying “One bad apple spoils the bunch”.

    1. I know that many restaurants and supermarkets prefer bouncing meals instead donated it to a food bank, and most of the discarded food is even unopened in many cases. I didn't know what mechanism or how the lawsuits influence the throwing of food rather than donating. So, I did a research and found that there is no reason to choose throwing it away over giving it to those who could use it. They are not going to lose money over something that is going through the garbage anyway, and donating it the restaurants and supermarkets earn tax breaks. The food donation is a tremendous financial benefit and helps the needy. Why more restaurants not participate? I think, is mainly the fear of being sued, because there is a small chance that someone could get sick from eat this donated food, give them the opportunity to sue the companies that help. However, thanks to many states now restaurants will be released from liability in the event of illness from food donation. I found that The Food Donation Guide outlines how they can be free from the fear of lawsuits if someone gets sick while eating donated food. Although, numerous restaurants and supermarkets are taking a great lead on these donations, but is not enough, we need more in order to stop hunger.

At times they even throw away the food for example when you go to a restaurant and the waiter messed your order chef usually throws away the food rather then putting it away and maybe thinking I can give it to a homeless . When you donate is really good to our society by everyone donating the financial benefit can help does in need . I think that our goverment doesn't care about those we pay taxes and I think they should worry about feeding those in needed whats the point of making our city clean or nice when the bridges and streets are full of homeless people.

I read different articles with different viewpoints. In these items we can learn what the word means hunger, is a short word that has great meaning.
It is true that the primary meaning of this word is the lack of food for satisfier human body needs to carry out their duties. But also keep in mind that people who suffer from hunger have other lack. Example, as most people who are not heading to take your table every day, also lack a home and to dress. It is true that our city is filled with people living on the street. The number of homeless people is every day higher.
One of the reasons of hunger in our country is the lack of jobs. Many families have lost their jobs due to the economic crisis that is traversing the country. The representatives of the Governments should keep this situation when they do their work plan to improve the country economic...
It should be noted that many institutions if they pay attention people need care, suffering from hunger. For example I have heard people who have received the basket of a neighboring church. Also, an organization called Camacol every Christmas. They delivered food to 3,000 families to have a happy holiday what being offered them a complete family shopping. This institution receives grants from various brand food producers who make this donation in order to help the needy.

The doorbell at my house rang at least 5 times a day from people who knew where to find help. If today we start to care more for our neighbors, instead of been so indifferent and and so scare that everybody is going to hurt us, this example, may need some type of improvement due to the current times, but I think is worth considering. 1. Even though, the term hunger is used often to denote lack and craving for food, it can as well be used to imply the longing for things other than food. For instance, we hear people saying that they are hungering for justice to be done in their cases. Therefore, this shows that hunger is not only for food but justice as well. It is a strong craving for something that is not present at the moment. Prisoners hunger for that day when finally freedom will be given to them; that chance to act and engage in their own desired activities. This kind of hunger is caused by man who inflicts it on others, and mostly to the poor. Because some few rich people want to benefit themselves in expense of the poor majority, they will create laws that will enrich them as the poor become poorer. This man-made hunger can only be fought by bringing equality in the society and the world at large.

I’ve done it countless times and I feel like many people, sadly, do not extend their hand to the homeless that are just looking for something to eat. It could be with donating clothes and donating cans we can do something that can really affect people in return. What she says is honestly the truth many people out there don’t care about others, but we should take into consideration what others don’t have by providing them a meal, or even giving them shelter and some necessities. Nathalie’s approach to this was right on point as well the homeless people they are less fortunate and we shall do something they would enjoy we can give them money, ask them if they want a meal or if they want us to buy them clothes. As a result, what the community should do for these people is to have them go to a restaurant and make it a charity event in which many missions can help them get back and be the best they can. To conclude, I assure this will be very beneficial to them and it’s a good thing because the government can pitch in more and try to find them a home.

Miami is a city where the streets are full of luxury cars, their houses are very expensive and despite this all around there are many people who do not have as you said Jessica a plate of food to put on your table.
Miami is a city where you can visit an unlimited number of expensive restaurants where at the end of the day that expensive food is thrown away in the trash. If this leftover food was donated to the needy, the rate of hunger in our community is greatly reduced.
In my humble opinion this is a situation that affects us all equally, but we are most blind eye. It would be very good for society and for those people who every day have to ask for money on the streets or simply go to bed without taking any food to your mouth helps create a plan to remove the word HUNGER dictionary

Even though I was born and raised in a place where you can not see homelessness, and it is not usual to have actual homeless wondering around, my mother always thought me help those in need. I would like that every single person would help at least one person throughout the week. I think this way the world would be a different place. Sometimes, unfortunately we judge homeless and most of the people don not give them money because they are concern if the money will be used with the right purpose. As we all know, some homeless and beggars use the money to maintain their addictions. I think that the way you do it is really good because instead of giving them the money and the temptation to do something bad with it, you buy them the meal needed at the moment. We should all do it like that not only with meals but also with clothing.

  24. With these alarming statements about how inadequate South Florida’s public food consumption is, it is only fair to start with our dinner table. Instead of cooking six steaks for five family members, we should just settle for five. Yes, someone may eat the sixth steak, but it could also be that steak that turns into that unrecognizable lump of mold in the back of the fridge three months later. Maybe some self-control could also take part in this challenge. Instead of forcing ourselves to eat those second helpings we regret taking in the first place, we should downsize to more moderate meals and CONSIDER a second plate after 20 minutes of eating the first one.

  25. Hunger is as old as human beings are, and its effects are felt by both young and old alike. We take supper in a great motel but the following morning we wake with pangs of hunger. If we are on a long journey without food, the hunger will strike. People can as well deny themselves food for different reasons. For example, one would fast food so as to pray, another would fast to lose or watch weight, still others would fast as a recommendation from the doctor prior to the surgical procedure and worse are those who are hungry because they do not have food at all. Therefore, this paper seeks to explore the definition of hunger, as well as to provide information about hunger both locally and globally.

  26. Hunger for food is the worst because it can lead to death if prolonged. We often watch on our televisions people dying of hunger. In Miami we have a lot of homeless. We read in the newspapers people even going to an extent of eating cow dung to ward off hunger. Lack of food or nutrients is caused by various factors. For instance, prolonged dry spells leads to drought, invasion of insects on crops when there is no appropriate insect side, poor methods of food production, and lack of money to buy food.

The homeless go hungry , because most are drug addicts, and schizoprenics; not because they do not get any food assitance. Im pretty sure that they get food stamps or something. The real problem lies on the food prices, and in what is being added or the way certain food is being produced, and the consecuences for our healht , and the planet's.

  27. It shocked me when I read that 30% of Dade County is suffering from hunger. We live in the most powerful country in the world; this data would sound impossible for me. Especially in a country that spend billions of dollars on different wars around the world, and helping others in developing countries. It’s fair that we help others countries in need, but we have to focus in our necessity first. If we engage this war against hunger properly and together, our chances of succeed are going to be almost guaranteed. First we have to commit our self to be more responsible when we buy groceries, so we buy what we need and reduce food waste to the minimum. Second the government has to create more programs to help people in need, and change the way they see hunger. Here in the U.S. food assistance programs are created in ways that help is provided through an array of need-based food assistance programs instead of rights-based approaches. Third authorities in charge of controlling these non-profit organizations have to do a better job in enforcing the laws created to control these types of identities. A lot of these non-profit organizations spend more money in salaries, operations cost, and executive expenses that what they do in helping the people in need. Just to name one, the Red Cross which is one of the most recognizes organization of this kind has an 80% to 20% ratio. Meaning that every dollar they receive through donations or Governmental help, yet 80 cents are spent in salaries, operational cost, and executive expenses, and the other 20 cents are the ones that actually go to the people in need. That’s why we have to engage more in our community because the hand to hand help is more effective that all the help these organizations are providing now a day. At the end, if we make hunger everyone’s problem. We will be able to eradicate hunger or at least decrease it significantly.

    1. I think that the correct way to put that statistic is: 30 percent of miami dade is on goverment support or something. There are many people out there that cannot afford their food, due to unemployment, or low wages, but that does not mean that they all go hungry, specially the children. There many goverment programs that help people.

    2. I have been thinking about CBS4 Miami News report on child hunger in the South Florida, and I have to admit that it took me by surprise. I read the report for a second time, and then questions came to mi mind. First, I think the concept hunger should be definite. For example, there is of part of the report that refers to a high rate of people who can’t afford to buy all of the food they need, and it is precisely the expression “all of the food they need” what has changed my opinion from the first time that I just read the news’s highlight. So, I am not so sure about 30 % of families with children in South Florida are going hunger. Is this percentage going really hunger or a high rate of people can’t afford to buy all of the food they need?

    4. I agree with Alejandro,I have seen homeless in the streets, it is normal in any city in this country, but more shocking is that there are children and the elderly who have no place to live and to eat. That’s happening in Florida, the statistics of hungry people have increased. The Food banks and others programs have been instrumental in helping to keep our neighbors fed during this economic crisis. The Floridians, who are unemployed, have the option to work with reduced wages or work fewer hours. Many of them never thought they would need a helping hand and turn to government programs. We should think about doing something to help the problem of hunger concerns in Florida, because approximately the number of people who come to Feeding America food banks for assistance has increased during recent years.

  28. Since the post was announced, there are few ideas I have been thinking about how to try to solve the hunger to 30 % of families with children in South Florida that can’t afford to buy food. First of all, government’s institutions like Children and Family should increase the amount of food stamps that they offer; by doing this that 30 % of hungers people in South Florida that CBS4 refers to will decrease dramatically. A second idea that has kept rounding my mind is related with wasted food. I mentioned in one of my previous posted that policies in order to not waste food by corporations could be implemented in Tallahassee. But; furthermore, this is a matter of conciseness. Owner of big food-chains like Publix, Sedano, or Winn Dixie could easily donate food that are about to expire.

I have seem owners of food places throwing food away , and saying that if you dont pay for it, they rather throw it away , than give for free. I known a person that work in a restaurant and she was fired from her job because she took meal to her child. According to his boss this food must be thrown away in the trash. This cannot be possible how a person can be fired from her job per a dish of meal that will be throw away in the trash.

If we were all to band together and try to understand each others cultures, lives, feelings; then I truly believe that hunger and other issues pertaining society will be eliminated.

Correspondingly, the nation had plenty resource in those days, so food secure was not an important element to take into consideration when the constitution was written. If it is truth the constitution of The United States of America is the world’s oldest constitution with only twenty- seven amendments; so is the fact that objectives and subjunctives condition after two hundred years have changed also. For instance, the last census of population came out with the number of over three hundred millions of people living here. Hunger is a serious issue and it doesn’t matter where it is it’s something that happens as a result of overpopulation, food shortages, and prices in foods. When I was in high school at Miami high we had a website in reading class that was called free rice.com and it was a website to support world hunger and it was simply a good generosity. It’s also a great thing to know restaurants and the food channel are willing to contribute to what is happening in the world with this issue it’s a phenomenon that keeps on going and without a doubt one day; I hope it ends in order for the world to think of others and make it a better place. Also, as this phenomenon occurs churches are willing to provide and contribute to these families that are in desire of getting this and contributing with as much as they can for these families to have what they need in order for this not continue and happen to them.

  33. there are three main causes of hunger in the United States: poverty all over the world, the way in which US political and economic system tries to keep the needy people poor, and the physical, mental and behavioral issues that disfavored people have.
The first cause is the privation of food in the world. As you should know other countries are more underprivileged than United States. People that suffer from poverty and hungry in foreign countries have two main ways to get a better live: through commerce because US has the capital and the labor, but the wages are higher than in poor countries, which have cheaper labor but not the capital. So, basically, US companies are moving their manufacture factories to countries as China leading to a rise in unemployment in US and an increase in poverty and hungry. This has been happening over the last 30 years and so on. Likewise, poor people from other countries use immigration to improve their lives, and move to countries where they can find jobs, even if they have to earn lower salaries than the established by the government.
Furthermore, the way in which the US economic and political system has kept certain people or groups relatively marginalized. First, the free enterprise, creating a battle for jobs, is benefiting the most skilled ones. On the other hand, there is a substantial amount of joblessness meaning that not everybody will find a job and the most affected are the least prepared ones. The government may be trying to label them as useless ,but what is in truth happening is that the private-enterprise system is not producing enough jobs for everyone. Secondly, the top level of business has been given the free-enterprise profits to themselves in recent years instead of giving them to the government. The US political system is not determined to help people with their needs , instead is distributing half of The US federal government optional expenses in Military and Security, and is assisted by a strong web of political and financial connections called the "military-industrial complex" which is much larger than expenditures to assist poor people.
Finally, which are the physical, mental and behavioral issues that lead people to live in poverty? Usually, people are cut-off by social class and race. They are only hired to work under bad conditions and earning little money. This can lead to corruption and delinquency to earn the cash , and also men who are not employed ,or don’t have a decent way to provide the income to support the family have decided not to marry . Provoking an increase in the single parent household, this is a new model of family not so recommended. The inability to make money leads to problems as scarcity of food ,health problems as stress and anxiety, poor housing and neglect parenting. Therefore, people who deal with the above cited problems are more often to be found practicing in bad behaviors such as crime, robbery, alcoholism, and drugs just to mention some.
After all, I hope your understood why is that hunger and poverty exist in United States. The main causes are overt: the poverty around the world leading to cheap labor and an increase in unemployment in US, the way in which the US economic and political system uses the money to satisfy their personal necessities instead of helping the poor people, and also the physical, mental and behavioral characteristics of some people.

  34. Maybe you are asking yourself how is possible that one of the richest countries around the world is battling with hungry. Well, while the world population increases also the amount of people that suffered the shortage of food. As a result, we have overlooked that United States as well bear with scarcity of food and poverty. Therefore, over the past decades, we have helped other countries as much as we could. Unfortunately, we have ignored our problems resulting in an increase on all kinds of difficulties for the American people. I am not against the help to the needy, but first we should solve our own problems and then provide aid to other countries. I am aware that the problems with food which US faces are not as terrible as in other parts throughout the world, but the truly way to create a solution is to support your people and then the rest to the world.
Maybe you ignored some data that I found regarding to hunger in United States. Did you know that 50.2 million people in America, counting 17.2 million children, are starving without food, or are so poor that don’t have sufficient money to keep an active and healthier live? Furthermore, greater than 16 million children in America are at danger of suffering hunger. That’s more than 1 in 5. So, 15.7 million children in America are struggling with poverty. Likewise, 30 percent of households with seniors have declared that in the last months had to choose between buy food or medicine, and 35 percent between foods and paying for heat or utilities. Furthermore, nearly 1 million seniors living alone do not have enough food to habitually eat or have to trust on bank foods or charities. Similarly, Veterans doubled the statistics needing emergency food. On the other hand, an increase of about 6% in the price of groceries has made poor people to figure out new ways to survive like buying expired food or visiting food banks. (Turkey club of America)
We cannot be so rude and accept that perhaps the government has not solved the problem; it has created some programs to help the deprived. The snap program meaning Supplemental Assistance Program provides monthly benefits to needy households to buy approved food items for authorized food stores. As the USDA has confirmed, the standard per person is four dollars a day.. In addition, the program WIC helps to pregnant women and children up to 12 years with milk, bread and approved items. However, 5.6 million households obtained emergency food from food pantries at least once during the last year. Moreover, the USDA recently found that about 96 billion pounds of food which were neither spoiled nor damaged were thrown away by households, restaurants, and supermarkets in the period of one year. Fresh fruits and vegetables, fluid milk, grain products, and sweeteners accounted for 2/3 of these losses.
As you could see, the statistics are real; there is huger in United States and its tiny the effort to improve this issue. Whereas our government is spending millions in wars and technology when it would only cost about $10 billion to $12 billion a year to effectively end hunger in our nation. I hope you understood why does that hunger exist in one of the most powerful countries around the world, and henceforth see things in another way. Always remember this quote “If you can't feed a hundred people, then just feed one.”

  35. The issue of world hunger is so bad. Recently I went through some pictures while I was doing a research paper about world hunger, and came across some very disturbing pictures of so many children and adults including animals, they were so skinny the bones can be clearly seen from the rib cage, small children walking around with no clothes or shoes just looking around to see if they find anything to eat. It was so sad, you can see the fear and hunger in their eyes even stray dogs looked so thin. I began to wonder how those people managed everyday with life and the struggles…

The worse part for me, in my opinion is seeing other parents try to nourish their children when they don’t even have enough nutrients in their own bodies for that, those parents have to see their child go to sleep hungry or cry every night because there is nothing they can do about it. I hope with all the attention world hunger gets that something gets doen soon or to atleast help all those people, start from somewhere and try to get as far as we can.

  40. World Environment Day also aims at enhancing political action towards saving the planet. Observance of this day enables governments to authorize global environmental conventions. World Environment Day does not affect public life but it simply encourages people to come forward and clean the environment. This day was first observed in 1972 when the Stockholm Conference on Human Environment opened. Representatives of 113 nations and more than 400 inter-governmental and non-governmental organizations joined in Sweden for this cause. A declaration which contained 26 rules about the environment and growth was passed at that meeting and an action plan was also set up. The Stockholm conference played a significant role in spreading this important message to all parts of the world along with influencing the policies of many nations. The first environmental action plan was drawn in 1973 by the European Union and since that year, different cities have been hosting this day.
This day which was started 40 years ago has become an important vehicle for stimulating global awareness of the environmental issues. This program helps in personalizing environmental problems while enabling people to take responsibility for protecting the environment and making them realize that they are powerful enough to change the world. This day highlights the significance of reasonable and sustainable growth. World Environment Day is for everyone. It encourages people to come together to make a cleaner and greener world for future generations. All people take part in this initiation and World Environment Day depends on people to make the world greener and better. The day highlights the need to organize programs like neighborhood clean-up, stopping the use of plastic bags and encourage people to do the same. What people can do is to encourage others to stop wasting food, to walk or begin recycling drives. There are endless possibilities. Environment can be protected in a number of ways and people can choose the way they want.

    2. I really agree with you because our planet needs our attention. The world environment day was established by the General Assembly of the United Nations in December 1972 EL15. This day was created to raise awareness of the humanity of care for our planet. This is one of the topics that must be prioritized by our society. As the standard of living that most of us, we needs five planets like we have to live. In our days, the advancement, development and technological advances are destroying our planet by step bounds. It is our duty and obligation to pay more attention to our earth. There is a world environment day but every day we must take action changes, such as recycling, saving water and electricity, take care of our forests which are the lungs of the planet and plant more trees near the cities. Every tree we plant gives us more opportunity of life to all who have the opportunity to enjoy this beautiful land. So, correct that we responsible to protect environmental where we live, not just the day that was marked but every day of our existence.

  41. Hunger these days is different and it doesn’t matter where it is. Until recent times I discovered this when I went to the grocery store and found out if you buy any products like banquet, healthy choice, and any others we can help with hunger in children. Hunger in children is just the same as in adults it is on the rise as well as the world for the same reasons. I believe a good way we can help with this global phenomenon is by having annual fairs with certain organizations like Rosalia Rojas responds to Alejandro we should address it to whomever is going through this currently. As a result, I also believe poverty has a big role like JGarcia says poverty is a main factor and without a doubt with a home, shelter there wouldn’t be any food for they can consume because of all the high prices of food. For this reason, people shouldn’t waste food and throw it out we can reuse it and give it to others that may be in need to have a food in order for nutrition if not what will they live off of. To conclude, malnutrition is another factor because without the proper nutrition they cannot live and they will have adequate production and they will become weak

It is truly sad to see expectant women with bad nutrition and unable to feed those little beings that come into the world and do not even know that they are facing. 1. I agree that hunger is not only happening in one country it happens globally. Many people are living through this situation. There are many factors that have raised this issue. The primary reasons are the weather conditions, the war in Iraq and other countries as well as population increase, and ultimately the economy or poverty rate. Most countries are overwhelmed by starvation this is faced through the influence of armed conflicts. It is challenging to maintain a stable food system there because there is a downturn in the economy. Another factor is the more people inhabit the country the more starvation there is. Poverty is extremely essential to consider when it comes to global hunger. As families fall into this category, they are bound to reduce their expenses and adjust to the lower living standards. This is a sad statistic because we know that many across the world are starving and need help with their economy. This is really devastating to know because we need to help others who are in need.

  45. I agree that many people at south Florida are dealing with lack of food and that is one of the main causes that are going around in south Florida. Many people that are lacking nutrition are due to lack of food. Food prices are increasing every year because of food storage. There isn’t enough food for everyone, and for those that can afford it, are the ones that wake up knowing that will always have a plate of food on their table. Also I think that lack of food also has to do with no jobs in south Florida. In south Florida jobs are what keep people living because of the money they are making makes stable enough to buy food for their self and for their families. Money is being used up, but not helping people with food storage. I think the government should help more homeless people and low and middle class then wasting money on unnecessary things. I think there should be more programs that help low and middle class people that are lacking food. Poorest countries like Africa, Asia etc. are still currently dealing with food storage due to dry land and lack of rain causing also to lack on water. South Florida is going through a stage where is going to get worse if the economy doesn’t get stable. The population in south Florida is incredible it’s increasing time after time. It’s hard for people to eat in south Florida when there are so many people and due to overpopulation, food prices will keep increasing.

Lack of foods is due to no jobs I also believe this is right and correctly, but ill add to her post that also malnutrition and lots of diseases can be contributed as this hunger issue. Not only this is in south Florida but in other countries as well like Asia, Africa, and many others. Also, another factor she says is our economy and it is getting worse and worse and if we don’t act up it would be chaos like she says overpopulation with lots of people everywhere and in streets. Money is another thing with no money with what they live they have to live off of others and that means no food, shelter, water, and no crops to be built for people to get crops.

  46. Organic foods are popular in south Florida but tend to be very expensive. I would say that wealthy people are mainly the ones that buy organic foods and fruits. Florida mainly grows organic crops and fruits, and sold in places like Whole foods or Publix. Place like whole foods usually sell their foods very expensive compared to other regular place like Winn Dixie and presidente. I think the main issue in south Florida is the food storage because stores like Publix run out of regular non organic food because people mainly aim for the cheaper type of foods that is not organic. There are programs out there that help the needy such as, the Red Cross or just food stamps. Those programs are a great source to help stop reducing people from eating and getting the right nutrition. There needs to be a big in south Florida for those that are suffering due to lack of food. If we don’t do anything about it, the situation will get worse and may increase people to be homeless. South Florida is known for its luxury streets, palm trees and fancy restaurants. The truth of it all is that Florida is not really like what people think we are considered 12th of the poorest city only due food storage. Many people wealthy people don’t care about others because they are financially stable as for those that can’t afford food.

  47. South Florida is all about working and being stable and being able to afford your own food. I’m glad that at least the government helps the needy people by providing them with food so that they can live like the rest of us. I wouldn’t also compare south Florida with Africa because it’s a major difference not in the sense of food, but climate. We don’t have dry lands, but we have lots of rain which makes it good for the crops being grown in farms. We don’t have to worry about Florida being dry because we are surrounded by water. The Baptist church is helping the needy by collecting money. When the Florida Baptist churches heard that twenty four thousand people die due to hunger every day. They automatically responded by collecting money through the Baptist hunger ministries. Later 162,000 people received food and most of them believed known as Christ as savior. I think we could do enough to help south Florida from lacking food storage. The best way to do it is to save money and not wasted on things that we don’t need for example, a new car, huge house, etc. it’s important that we step up and help those that really need food and are willing to afford it. I agree that in this world it is hard to survive if we don’t have the proper need and those are shelter, clothes and food. The worse thing seeing in the streets is a homeless person asking for food or money so that they can have something to eat. As for those that are not, I think everyone should be thankful that they have something to eat every day.

    1. In addition to these statements, we have children who also suffer from hunger across the world and even have no money to buy food. If one group of people cannot reach out to every single person we need to start from the bottom, by spreading the word. One word about starvation can make a difference. If every person in a community does a little to achieve this purpose, the world hunger may decrease effectively.

I think that all together can do something to help these people in poverty. Everything that everyone in the world to help these children will be wonderful.

  48. World Environment Day is very important because people must realize that the future of the planet is endangered. Handing over our common heritage to future generations will become difficult if the existing resources are not preserved. A large number of species are already extinct while many others are endangered. People must act fast to save the planet. The green cover is being depleted rapidly due to increasing human needs. The amount of rainfall has also decreased which is bringing about climate change. Melting of polar ice is also being observed as large icebergs float near Antarctica. If nothing is done to protect the environment, sea levels will rise which may submerge entire islands. Increasing global temperature can cause the loss of important fauna and flora. Every species plays an important role in the food change; therefore the ecosystem can be disrupted due to imbalance. It is the duty of all individuals to take part in controlling the depletion of resources.

  49. World Environment Day is observed in a different city every year and there is a new theme each year. Natural colors which depict nature, natural resources and the planet are used in several of the programs on this day. Sometimes soft shades of brown, green and blue are used along with images of the planet’s natural elements like clean rivers and seas, snowy peaks and greenery for promoting campaigns which support the day. The World Environment Day is important for stimulating awareness of the earth’s environment and encouraging political action. World Environment Day 2012 was hosted by Brazil in Rio de Janeiro. A seven-day long global exposition was organized by the host city. The theme for 2012 World Environment day was “Green Economy: Does it include You?” This theme focused on informing people about the Green Economy and also that everyone should be involved. The United Nations has defined green economy as the one which leads to better human comfort and social justice while the environmental hazards and ecological problems are reduced. A Green Economy can be considered as one which does not harm the environment. Such an economy helps in boosting the income of people and employment rate is also improved. Employment is supported by public and private investments for reducing carbon emissions and controlling pollution. It helps in enhancing energy and resource efficiency. World Environment Day 2013 will be celebrated in Mongolia on June 5. This year’s theme is, “Think. Eat. Save. Reduce your foodprint.” This theme will focus on the amount of food that is wasted every year and programs will be arranged to control food loss.
The 40th anniversary of World Environment Day will be observed this year on June 5 which was formulated by the United Nations to create awareness of environmental problems and to encourage people to save the planet. World Environment Day gives a clear message that it is the responsibility of all people to act now to avoid the depletion of natural resources. If nothing is done to reduce pollution, the ecosystems will be disrupted and life will become difficult for future generations. Though it is difficult to turn things around but people need to unite and take steps to protect the environment.

  50. Yesterday was celebrated the twenty and eight edition of the Mercedes Corporate Run in Down Town, Miami. For those who do marathons and triathlons, having food at the end of an event is not a big surprise. This is needed for the body to recuperate after the physical effort. Usually, the food consist of plenty fruits such as bananas which have potassium; oranges that have vitamins C; also watermelons or cantaloupes. In addition, rice and beans that is a good source of carb and protein, and beverages like Gatorade or water. However, in a particular event like yesterday, where over hundred companies have registered, a wider variety of food could have been seen. I saw how much food was left over or wasted, I should say, and to my surprise there was not any intention by companies or corporation to give a wiser used to the food. It was literally dumped into the trash cans. Containers full of food were thrown away while not even two blocks away from the event, the biggest shelter for homeless is located. I saw this, and I felt very sad. Reflecting on this I came out with the conclusion that the change has to come from inside, from each particular individual person. The only way we can continue developing in this society is shifting over way of thinking toward our neighbors. We need to stop think about ourselves and be more involve in our community

    2. I totally agree with you. I've worked in these types of events, and I feel bad with all the food that goes to the dump. Like you said with a homeless shelter located a few blocks away, is a real shame that all this food gets thrown in the garbage. You said something that is true; we have to do our part as an individual. It doesn't matter if it's a big or small what we do, but every little thing count. Sometimes by donating just a little of our time, we make a huge difference. Once we start acting like this, we will see the difference in our community. This we have to set it up as long -term goal, and not something that we can achieve in a week. Together we can do it.

  51. I agree with the comment of Katherine Vasquez and we as human beings must take the initiative for a better world. Many ads say, "Think. Feed. Save. It reduces your food footprint" (Think. Eat. Save. Reduce Your Foodprint) in order to reduce the loss and waste of food along the entire chain of food production and consumption.
Recent statistics said that each year, there is lost or wasted based in 1,300 million tons of food; which is, a third of the food produced, equivalent to one trillion dollars, which is really sad because there are millions of people around the world with precarious nutrition. We must accelerate the search mode to implemented measures to reduce waste and provide an overview and an information sharing portal for the many different initiatives on this issue.

  52. World Environment is an event that is expected to be one of the most celebrated global days for advocating for a positive action for the environment. That day is not by a single day activity but World Environment day activities take are done throughout the year and they are climaxed on June 05 for every year (UNEP, 2013). It is also designed in a way that its activities are done all over the world under a common theme. This celebration of World Environment Day started in 1972 and they have grown to be among the main vehicles that the United Nations stimulates global environmental awareness and has been used to encourage political consideration and action. Its momentum was increased during the Rio+20 Conference that was held in June 2012 in Brazil where the world leaders agreed to commit to the Outcome Documents from which the Sustainable Development Programs will be developed. This was promoted to the effects of climate change that are costing the governments millions of dollars due to the increase of greenhouse gases that are released into the atmosphere.

  53. The United Nations has been able to localize environmental issues and enabled everyone to realize the responsibility that they hold over the protection of the environment and make people agents of change in advocacy for equitable and sustainable development. The United Nations have been able to do this through the World Environment Day. The day has also been dedicated so that people can join hands together for the purpose of a cleaner, greener and sustainable future for both us and the generations to come. Everyone counts in this initiative and everyone is encouraged to participate in one way or another in contributing towards a clean neighborhood, stop the use of plastic bags, start a recycling and stop food waste. The endless is long but these all can be summed to the definition of green economy that is being promoted by the United Nations Environment Program that was elevated to The United Nations Organization for Environment.

  54. Perhaps in the case of Overtown and other areas of South Florida where people are currently experiencing hunger the old adage about teaching a man to fish is applicable. Instead of continuously collecting food for a food bank only to have it immediately diminished because there are so many hungry people, perhaps a long term solution should be provided on this upcoming Environment Day. It should be a solution that will not only alleviate the hunger but also improve the environment. Starting in one's own backyard may be literally applicable too. Instead of swooping in on World Environment Day which is June 5, bringing piles of canned and boxed goods, perhaps the Miami Community should be exploring ways to alleviate the hunger problem for good. One way is to create a community garden and/or a series of kitchen gardens that residents in the area can tend themselves.
Setting up food banks where people who have more than they need give to those who do not have enough is helpful, but food banks come with their own set of issues. First of all, those who do not need them access them occasionally, and little can be done to stop that because when someone says they are in need, it is difficult to make them prove it. Secondly, in the past five years, food banks have been taxed beyond their capabilities more often than not. Generous people continue to give, but donations have definitely dropped off. Another issue with food banks is that the food that can be donated must be non-perishable, so people are given "dinner in a box" type meals, which feeds a family, but it does not provide much nourishment. Canned tuna fish and black beans will provide some nutrients, but it would be difficult to persuade children to eat that more than once in awhile.
However, there is an alternative to food banks that will solve some of these issues anyway and that is gardening. Kari Lydersen of The New Standard says, "A recent report from the group Food First, called 'Beyond the Food Bank,' criticizes problems in the traditional food distribution model and calls instead for support of alternative, empowering food production projects like community gardens and urban household gardens" (Lydersen). This is not a new idea. In fact, Lydersen wrote the article in 2007, yet there are few community gardens in the city.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Part of the trouble is that there are few vacant city plots suitable for gardening. If one is found and developed, it is often subject to vandalism. It is terribly sad to have a place that has a name that includes the word "community" that must be enclosed by eight-foot razor wire fence and locked up at night so that vandals cannot destroy it. Somehow that takes away the good feeling one gets in participating in such a project. Yet, if gardens feed people, then the effort should be continued. However, individual kitchen gardens or victory gardens as they were known during World War II may be a better solution. Even when a person has little yard space, they can grow produce in containers, so some of the hunger problem may be alleviated this way. Volunteers can visit the neighborhood and help people to get maximum yield for their efforts. Each family would have to make an effort too, but food is somehow more satisfying when one has worked for it. Having one's own garden takes the stigma out of getting food for free. Instead, one has earned it. That attitude change alone may be enough to justify the extra effort that it takes to set up numerous gardens in what little space people might have to spare for such a project, but there is more than just that feeling involved.
When a person plants a tomato seed and waters it and watches it grow, tends it, weeds around it, and then one glorious day gets to pick and eat the tomatoes they so lovingly grew there is more than just satisfaction and pride. There is a feeling of belonging to nature. That gardener becomes part of the natural world. Not only that, no one but the gardener has touched the food. There will be no food borne illness acquired from eating that tomato, and because it is a plant, it will nourish the gardener and his/her children's bodies better than any can of tomatoes could. For these reasons, on June 5, people should volunteer to help a needy family start a garden not only for the family, but also for the environment.

  56. The theme for the World Environment Day is Think Eat Save. It is reported that the largest source of emissions in the United States is organic matter (UNEP, 2013). Food waste has been one of the major problems that are being faced by most developed countries while in the developing food production has been a challenge. Cases have been aired of our people have been dying of hunger in the Sub-Saharan countries and the poor countries in Asia but the SBC4 shocked the world to air cases of food shortage in Florida.
The United Nations agency, Food and Agriculture Organizations (F.A.O) has done a comprehensive report on food security and under the theme of The World Environment Day of the year 2013 more has been done. In the case of Florida having such unfortunate reports on food shortage, the problem must have been from poor food supply chain management (FAO, 2011). According to the United Nations Environment Program, food waste is mainly experienced in the early stages of production in the food chain. This has been traced back to financial, technical, inadequacy of food storage and cooling facilities and managerial constraints. Therefore this calls for the strengthening of the supply chain through the support of farmers and investing in infrastructure, transportation. This would as well include expanding of the food and packaging industry that would help increase the amount of food that get to the consumer and reduce the amount of food that goes into waste.

  57. I seem that we must take conscience about this situation that affect many children and people around the world. We have to take action because there are many children feeling hungry. People living under poverty do not have the resources necessary to keeping their family in a good life's standard. Many resources has been thrown in the trash; we have been spent a lot resource from our planet. Consequently, in most of the countries in which hunger is rife there are children going hunger. We have to take a moment to think about these people. Sometime, we asked ourselves how these people feel? I think, people from these countries can feel a sensation of unrest or anxiety motivated by an absence of food, joined with a great wish to eat. Imagine for a second, those children that life in poverty because they parents cannot have resources to raise them. For someone people the sun shines, but for other people they life seems very dark. I feel good all together do something for those people who need us. We know that global warming is caused because the earth is exposed to high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. We are very responsible of that because if the carbon dioxide continue to increase the air pollution will continue to increase too. The effects of global warming contribute to increase natural disasters like floods, tornadoes, cyclones and tsunamis. It can be avoided if we use fewer resources from our planet.

  58. I agree with the comments of Anisley Sesin. World Environment Day be celebrate in its day but people should take action to contribute with our environment in a positive way during throughout the year. 59. • A big part of the problem is that some people do not believe that our planet is damaged and will continue to damage. We can try to avoid the environment problem using fewer combustible, for example. A good way to do this is eating locally. In this way we can feeding ourselves in a natural manner, our food taste good, our food will be fresh, and we won not need that our food come from another places needing a truck or air plane to transfer it. Some people love imported food, but they do not think that this kind of food affect global warming because using truck or air plane increases the carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. People do not think that locally growth food has fewer chemical than imported food because local farmer does not put much chemicals in their crops. Local food has less pesticide than imported food. For this people that do not believe that local growth food is better, I recommend they buy local food and taste it. In this way they are able to know that this kind of food is better, and they are able to contribute with our environment too. I people buy this kind of food; farmers can crops more and our economic will be increase, decreasing pollution caused by carbon dioxide.

  60. Also, it is important to note that the World Environment Day was created with the aim that every year people around the world take aware that our planet is slowly being destroyed, and millions of human beings are suffering from hunger and poverty. According to FAO, are wasted each year 1.3 billion tons of food. This corresponds to food production throughout sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, one of every seven people on earth go to bed hungry and 20,000 children under 5 die of hunger every day. Currently, our planet provides the necessary resources for its 7 billion inhabitants. However, FAO estimates that one-third of food production are lost or discarded. This fact is highly detrimental to the natural sources of resources and generates a negative impact on our environment. Therefore, the objectives of this campaign are to give a human face to environmental issues, empower people to become active agents of sustainable and equitable development, promote the community role in changing attitudes toward environmental, and encourage cooperation, which will ensure all nations and peoples enjoy a safer and more prosperous future.

    ReplyDelete
  61. It is estimated that 30% of all food in the United States is wasted annually. This wastage accounts for US$48.3 billion economically. However, the impact of food waste is not only financial but also environmental. During food production chemicals, pesticides, fertilizers and fuel are used. This means that when the food goes into waste, these resources are as well wasted. Consequently when the food gets wasted it starts to rot and the methane gas is produced during the process. These leads to increase of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere hence increasing temperature of the atmosphere that in the long-run leads to climate change. It is also estimated also that half the water that is used in producing these wasted foods goes into waste and these creates to the increase in the water footprint. It adds insult to the United States Federal government that has to spend more money in feeding those that are affected by food shortage in Florida.
Few Americans realize the importance of sustainable food chain management and they do not realize what impacts they create to the society. Private sector and the government need to develop policies that will encourage investors in putting their resources into food and packaging that is under invested in (UNEP, 2009). Communities in Florida should come together and brainstorm how they would distribute the food resources equitably and sustainably in a way to foster growth and development of the region both economically, environmentally and socially. Everyone should take the initiative of contributing towards ending the food shortage problem in Florida by acting and advocating for solutions that are favorable to all the parties involved.
The people of Florida should develop forums and groups of like-minded people to foster awareness of the problem that is being faced in Florida through dialogue, education outreach and catalyze the development of innovative solutions to the inequitable and unsustainable food crisis. The city can think and work together to cultivate the change that will ensure there is equitable food distribution to those that have food shortage and minimize food loss to those who have access to it.

  62. South Florida is one of the states in the U.S that attracts many visitors from across the globe not for anything such as sites of starving families and children living below a dollar a day, but for its outstanding restaurants, magnificent natural curved beaches and fantastic infrastructure. Little was it known that beneath the ripe juicy apple lays the rot. The focus of this article is not if or if not there are starving persons in South Florida to the tune of 30%, but rather about the possible solutions that can be implemented by the victims. The question that forms the basis of this article is; can the Miami community distribute the vast resources bestowed on them in the magic city? Can these initiatives do enough? Where should be the starting point?
Human problems, be they social, financial or otherwise are multi-factored in their causes and their solutions. There are many remedies that can be given to these families that find it hard to put food on their tables. However, the driving principle that should govern the selection of any of the remedies is the type of solution being sought is either short term or long term. Therefore, to curb the problem once and for all or both measures need to be taken. Next, it is vital to establish the root cause of the problem before even designing the intervention.
South Florida families being the focus, an economic theory can be used to explain the scenario. How would people starve in a rich place like Florida? The answer is because it is a rich place. From and economic viewpoint, other factors being constant, in a place of high supply of money the cost of living goes high, it is heightened by the fact that the most traded commodities are foods. Since the cost of living is high, even the local farmers prefer to sell to buyers who can pay them the value that can enable them stay afloat in the economy.
The other factor is that with all these businesses within and around Florida there are a lot of formal employment opportunities in the service industry that offer stable and regular source of income to these families. On the other hand, it takes people away from farming and other agricultural activities that would supply food to the whole community. Therefore, the few people that grow food have the monopoly of selling it at high prices as dictated by the demand of it.
The brief analysis of Florida’s case depicts that the kind of solution it needs are supplementary, and not a complete change in their daily life activity. They already have a livelihood; it is only that the form of livelihood does not put enough on the table. Providing food could be a short term solution to the public by having a country not being able to feed itself; however, this is equivalent to giving a perennial popper fish instead of teaching them how to fish. This is the fastest; it hugely depends on the goodwill of the blessed in the community to give and cannot be sustained.
Other approaches include, cultivating a culture of people having small gardens that they tend at their free time and acts as a supplementary to their source of food. This will not only cut their dependency to buying food, but will also increase food supply in the community and will have a net resultant food influx. The businesses could also come into a mutual existence between them and the inhabiting community so that they do not over compete for the same market. Initiatives aimed at creating awareness in the general population could come in handy as it has worked in some areas of the world.

  63. This is appalling and shocking to know that the city we live in "is 12th on the list of American areas with food shortage problems." I know we have a poverty and homeless problem but to think there are families with children going hungry is scary to me. Yes, if you look around, you do see wealth. You see the luxury cars, homes, boats, restaurants, etc. And you think we have it all. I heard from a friend that was in the hospitality industry they could not give their leftovers to the homeless shelters or people due to health reasons. So all that food at the end of the night goods in the garbage. What does it matter, they served it that day or the next, it should be fine. So instead of it being used by others, it is thrown in the garbage. Grocery stores, restaurants, bakeries, etc should be able to donate those goods to the needy. That would be one way to help and not waste. We all need to become more aware and help. If you cannot donate monetarily, you can volunteer at food banks or shelters.

  64. It’s hard for me to believe that this county is suffering from such a high percent of hunger. I think first we have to look more into this study, and explain better what hunger is. I know you can get up to $200 dollars worth of food stamps per person from children and family, so how it’s possible that this county has such of a high percent of hunger. Especially when you have kids, these make it easier to obtain this type of food assistance program. These programs are essential for these people in need, but what happens is that there are a lot of people who know how to work the system and apply for these benefits without having the requirements to qualify. Since all these governments programs work from an assigned budget, a lot of people end up without this much needed help. The agencies, which are in charge of controlling these food assistance programs, have to do a better job when it comes to regulate who receive this type of help. In order to, provide this help to the people who really qualify.

    1. I agree with you David, there are many people who take advantage of government programs without actually having the requirements. Unfortunately, the government does not have the ability to check the accuracy of the information provide by them. There is no control to refute the state of these unscrupulous people. Another point is the rising of rent and essential utilities, people with minimum wages or pensions don’t earn enough for rent and expenses, and which in turn is above the poverty limit set by the government, are not eligible for these programs. Mostly, it is not enough to cover all their needs. In other words, they do not have other options due to the economic crisis and unemployment. Besides, we cannot forget those families with children who cannot cover opting for these benefits because of their legal status. I think that these people increase the statistics of hunger in Florida.

  65. In base to those statistics, we should encourage ourselves and start making big changes to our future and forthcoming generations. This is the chance do not wait until last; it could be late to save a person’s live. If those statics are real, we are not doing enough for those people who need help. It really sadly saw people wasting money without realize how many kids are dying daily because the hunger and poverty. Once in a while, there are things you do not see the value, and we waste or throw away without thinking twice. However, for others could be something essential or very useful, which can make theirs days with a simple act of kindness. We should become more human and no waste food, cloth nor money indiscriminately, think that things you don’t see the value, for other could change his or her life.

  66. As a final conclusion, It should be noted that according to the FAO believes that farmers play a key role in the fight against hunger and poverty. That is, to reduce hunger is necessary to invest more and better in agriculture. In other words, Agricultural investments are key to promoting growth, reducing poverty and hunger and promoting environmental sustainability. In addition, to get out of poverty requires a solid economy that creates jobs and decent wages, a government that can provide education and good nutrition, especially for children and those from low-income as well as promotion of equality gender and protection to vulnerable countries during a crisis. On the other hand, we cannot forget to care for and protect the environment in which we live. We must take the necessary measures and be informed about everything related to contamination and global warming. There are many ways to prevent such as saving energy, conserve water as well as also learn to recycle. It is very important to realize that our future generations need us. It's time to change and start doing something to save our planet.

    1. Hunger is a challenge today, which requires more effort and dedication by all politicians and organizations around the world, especially because hunger and malnutrition are conditions that cause death, and those most affected are children, who die because they have no enough food to survive. In contrast, most children in developed countries have so much food, and sometimes they do not value and throw away; children follow us if we do not teach them to appreciate the treasury we have they will not learn to make rational use of resources, and feel a duty to help those in need. So, we should not be indifferent to the problem of hunger
Different organizations and politicians at all levels of government must be aware of the seriousness of the problem and carry out plans and measures to help reduce hunger; a few days ago I heard a new that got me thinking, in Down Town Miami a religious institution that has long been dedicated to feeding homeless, was being questioned because the institution did not have permission to distribute food to these people, and the City of Miami had received several complaints from local residents because homeless after eating let the street dirty , which is understood and those who live around there have the right to complaint, but what called my attention is that instead of eliminating these humanitarian and beautiful acts; the government should work together with different organization and the community in general to seek alternatives to solve this problem; it is our problem, for religious, politicians; in other words this should be a concern for everybody.

  69. the main question in this blog is very interesting: is there another way , or new ways we can distribute our food in miami? can we do enough? i think that, by asking this question, they are approaching an issue that is currently impending, and to which we have to devote time to think about
i precisely think that the real problem is distribution. in a world where practically everything is being industrialized , and specifically in this country, where is said that our economy is a stunning success, one can certainly wonder: how is it possible that so many families do not have a hot meal to put in their tables, or how is possible that the so called land of plenty has starving families even in urban zones?
again i think this all has to do with distribution. we would have to rethink the ways we are doing things and reinvent our economy system so that everyone has access to food. we would have to stop using staple foods, like corn or soy, to produce biofuels (after all, is it of more priority our food or the fuel for our cas?)we would have to take clear, concise and radical measures to eliminate the effects of climate change and global warming that are damaging our crops. we would also have to think about eliminating the unbalanced distribution of exportations. ( how is it possible that countries like bangladesh export almos 87 percent of the food they produce while their people are starving in the same country?
in conclusion , i think we have to start looking for the roots of this hunger problem in miami and the rest of the world. im not convinced that we have no enough food. statistics show that only in the united states , theoretically we can feed over a billion people. so why are stills so many familes starving? are we distributing our food correctly? are we defining priorities and using food accordingly? or are we prioritizing fuel production, catle alimentation and exports? i think the aswers to these questions would lead us to good ways of solving this hunger problem here in miami

    1. I am trying to answer these questions too. In my opinion, these questions are useful to reflect and question ourselves, if we remain passive about the hunger epidemic, or everybody take awareness and help to decrease this growing phenomenon, which affect us, in general all who live on this planet, above all the human side, we must not remain passive while a lot of people worldwide suffer from hunger and even worse, malnutrition. contrasts as in cities like ours, Miami, wasted food in all its varieties and forms, beginning with the supermarkets, which throw away tons of food when it reaches the expiration date; in the same way restaurants discarded food in good condition, this food could satisfy the hunger of many, but the owners of these places claim that could get in trouble, face demands and legal problems if they let people eat this food, something difficult to understand, it is a fresh food, processed to eat for the customers who come to the restaurant, but at the same time, this food cannot be eaten by those who do not have money to pay, contradictory, right?

      Delete
    2. It is certainly very contradictory that while in restaurants and supermarkets large amounts of food are thrown away every day , many people in the streets do not have what to eat.Is it fair to wait until the expiration date to then throw away this food? I used to work in a supermarket and the expiration date, for the majority of the products does not necessarily mean that the food is in bad condition, the expiration date only means that the store is supposed to have sold that product by that date. So it is really a pitty that, like you said, companies deny this food to homeless and hungry people because they said that they could get in trouble. Fresh food is wasted and thrown away, it is better for companies to see people starving that to face a demand , right? Unbelievable!

    3. For most of us, the image of hunger is that of a small, visibly malnourished child, with an extended belly and bulging eyes, tragically suffering his incomprehensible destiny in a safely distant land.

Unfortunately, 50 million Americans struggle to put food on the table every day, and about one million of them right here in South Florida, and Miami, the place where we live. Various local organizations, public and private, including grocery store chains and several restaurants, donate food year-round, but more partners are needed to keep up with the tremendous need.

  70. There are many ways you can donate to help fight hunger such as donation of food and money in churches where poor people go to receive charity. We have enough food to feed everyone! Studies show that up to 40% of all available food in the U.S. goes to waste. Help local farmers, restaurants, schools, universities, hotels, or sports and entertainment venues get their extra food to people in need. Organize food drivers with deep discount can help to educate the population to donate nutritious food to those in need. Another way is supporting a backpack feeding program. Hungry kids suffer most during schools breaks, like weekends, holidays, and summer vacations. Backpack feeding programs provide backpacks full of food for kids over weekends or school breaks. These programs are both effective and a perfect opportunity to make a powerful impact. Moreover, It is important to teach families about healthy eating and cooking. Eating healthy is a challenge, especially when you are on a budget. Health foods, like fruits and vegetables, are usually more expensive than processed food at the grocery store and the least likely foods to be received at food banks. Raise public awareness of childhood hunger in your community. Organize a public education campaign to share the facts about childhood hunger in your community and let people know how they can help.

  71. It's not surprising to me that so many families in South Florida are going hungry.A lot of people think of Miami and they think of nice cars, beautiful beaches, resorts, but the reality of the people who live in poverty is never shown.I think the city definently should start distributing the resources we have here in Miami. There's tons of ways to do this. One of the ways you can start is to form a local hunger action group in the community. The group would work together to organize on behalf of the hungry-sponsoring fod drives, hosting a speaker on hunger, supporting local feeding agencies. If you want to take it up a notch, lobby your local government to raise wages for certain jobs.A lot of people who's families are struggling with hunger, work jobs that pay only minimum wage such as resturants or retail.Of course the hunger problem isn't one that can be fixed overnight, but by actually trying to do something about it,you can be a difference in the community and save at least one family from going hungry tonight.

    1. When we talk about hunger, I think that it is also true that malnutrition is a side that we should look at.It is the lack of some nutrients that are necessary for the human health. For example, there are different types of malnutrition. One of the most relevant is protein or energy-malnutrition,which is the absence of enough protein mostly coming from meat and food rich of calories that provides energy. The other type of malnutrition is the deficiency of vitamins and minerals called micro nutrients. Furthermore, obesity is one aspect that calls particular attention;it is not due to lack of calories but because of too many also coming from poor food choices.
People don't realize that eating well is eating organized.Because of the style of life that most of the time we are forced to have,we miss meal periods such as lunch or dinner sometimes.Work and school can be a good example;sometimes we are in a rush of time and some people just think that because their sense of appetite is absent, it is fine not to eat at that moment.Continuously doing this, affects our health causing then malnutrition and stronger consequences that involve our living.

  72. For most of us, the image of hunger is visibly malnourished child, with an extended belly and bulging eyes, tragically suffering his unintelligible fortune in a safely distant land. But we don’t have to look far-off to “see” the face of hunger or to hear the stories of the hungry in our midst. Hunger hides, barely, if we only bother to look and pay attention, right here in our community in the Miami Dade area, we would be able to notice and see the unfortunate people that many have in a quite small community. Is this what the twenty first century has converted us into that we don’t even know are neighbors and the needy people we have so close to us, and we have no idea. There are almost one million people in South Florida who fight every day to put food on their table. For one of every four children who go to bed starving, with only their school meal as their only meal for the day. Almost 150,000 seniors on fixed incomes have to choose between paying for medication and buying groceries. And single working mothers, some of them nurses I’ve met in our public hospitals, eat patients’ leftovers because they can’t afford to buy lunch. How can that be in this country where we have more than enough food and resources to feed the entire population in the US? It is truly an outrage that in these wealthy community hard-working individuals, who often work two jobs, living paycheck to paycheck, struggle daily to provide food for their families. And yet very few people seem to know the problem exists. I first became involved in knowing more information about hunger, as I was doing a project in English. As I was researching I have come to finding out that people in my neighborhood are fighting to put food on their table and feed their families, as well as trying to maintain their home. As I began to understand about the cause, I found a neighbor who is going through this struggle. As I began to know her better, I learned she was embarrassed to collect her one bag of groceries for the week. She wasn’t this “welfare mom” that we stereotype and condemn in this country; she was not the lazy, weak, “milk the system” individual so often demonized by those who prefer to look at poverty from a distance. Her condition did not result from any moral failure on her part. She was working 70 hours a week, at minimum-wage jobs, and couldn’t bridge the gap between her income, and the cost of living. Slowly recovering from this recession that has affected most of us, the reality of poverty and hunger in our community has only gotten worse. And yet, it doesn’t have to be that way. We have the resources to feed the hungry. We live in a consumer-driven society that throws away almost 30 percent of all retail food. We live in a state that throws away hundreds of millions of pounds of fresh produce yearly — yet some people turn a basic need like food into a political issue or think that hunger doesn’t exist in this country. Regrettably, 50 million Americans struggle to put food on the table every day — one million of them right here in South Florida. Various local organizations, public and private, including grocery store chains and several restaurants, donate food year-round, but more partners are needed to keep up with the tremendous need. We cross paths with the hungry every day, often not recognizing who they are. But it doesn’t have to be that way. We have the resources to ensure that no one goes hungry, especially children. We produce enough to ensure that every man, woman and child in our community get fed, yet the state government has cut back on worthwhile USDA programs. This is an issue of pure humanity, compassion and helping our neighbor. Our fundamental values as a caring community and nation are at stake. Let’s come together as a community and get to know our neighbors and see who we can lend a hand too.

    1. On the other hand, it is a big issue that some governments have the cause of hunger in many countries because of their massive systems.Their politic and economic system is controlled by the military so the resources and economic power ends in a minority group, who enjoy wellness, while the others have to fight to survive. Basically this governments are not focused on helping the people of the country but in helping themselves, which affects the income of poor people;they let destroy the natural source source of their countries decreasing the agricultural production as example of the economy base of some countries, mostly in the Caribbean, where this governments waste all way of national production.

    2. 1 out of every 3 people in a developing country is affected by malnutrition. Malnutrition is when the human body isn’t getting enough food or the improper foods so it is not correctly being fed nutrients. According to the United Nations Food and Agriculture, One in twelve people worldwide are malnourished, including 160 million children under the age of 5, showing a high percentage in our state, Florida. Malnutrition weakens resistance and increases the risk of dying from pneumonia, diarrhea, malaria, measles or AIDS, five diseases that are responsible for half of the 9.8 million deaths in children under five every year. Most of malnutrition cases affect very young children below the age or 5, the children aren’t fed or fed extremely little. This eventually tears their chances of even surviving the first 2 years of their life. The biggest scare about the whole issue is how easily it can truly be solved, but we are all to unwilling to actually try and solve the problem. To satisfy the world's sanitation and food requirements would cost only US$13 billion- what the people of the United States and the European Union spend on perfume each year

  73. I think these problems are connected in one way or another. Global warming is one of the most common points which affect our production of food. Another important point is the economy of the countries every day has been decreasing. All this problems have been ending in a global hunger issue that has been increasing day by day. I think governments should prioritize the real problems of their countries and help to aware more people about the situation we are living every day. We could help our community and our country doing social work and in our homes too. We as humans must become more aware and help improve the quality of life of each person. We should donate money and food to people suffering from hunger and poverty in the world. We should also tap more of our food before throwing them away every day.

  74. It is incredible that scientists are predicting a four-degree, instead of a two degree increased by the end of this century. This means that the crisis of global warming in increasing, out of the control of the previous predictions. It is inconceivable for me that our skyline can go look like Beijing’s affected skyline. We have to act in all the possible ways with the purpose of reducing our carbon footprint.
For 43 years we have been celebrating the World Environmental Day; however, I believe that June 5 should not be the only day dedicated to our environment, we have to work every day, by reducing our food waste or carbon footprint. If South Florida is 12th in the last of American areas with food shortage problem, we have to achieve a goal to change this number.
I have participated in many Service Learning activities at Interamerican Campus by helping in Overtown. I have become aware of the situation and I have been taking an active initiative in transmitting to other student the reality of this area. In addition I would like to encourage more people in getting involved in this kind of activities which can help to reduce hunger in Miami and create a better community.

  75. As environmental day approaches, we have to think about the families that are starving and find new ways to solve this problem and at the same time help the environment. Besides rethinking our ways of distributing our food here at Miami, a topic which I already posted about, I think that one good way of fighting hunger is developing more our local economy by staring to eat locally. Why? The benefits are more than evident: local food is certainly fresher, tastier and more delicious, which consequently leads to healthier food because we are not eating food that has been processed, packed and kept under conservation many days from the day they were picked up in the farmland.
Another advantage for this strategy is that it would definitely reduce the prices for food, and local families would have more access to it. The handling and packaging of food, along with the transportation many miles away from their origin farmland considerably increases the prices of food. With local markets and local food supplies available, people would enjoy better prices and they would know better where the food comes from.
Still another way of fighting hunger here in Miami is through donation. Like many of my peers have said, there are currently many charitable organizations, like churches and nonprofit associations that collect funds and food for the homeless and people in need. I personally have helped one of this institutions which is Emmanuel Baptist Church. Every Sunday a group of young people go to the downtown area and give sandwiches and a bottle of water to the homeless that they encounter. This is a great idea and it not only helps this hungry people , but it also helps you as a person because of the do good feel good effect.

  76. People tend to have the misconception that hunger is merely a third world country issue, but in fact hunger is a worldwide problem. “Nearly 1 in 6 Americans, and more than 1 in 5 children are food deprived in the United States.” Studies have indicated that unemployment is the determinant factor of hunger in the United States, in contrast to other countries where hunger is due to poverty. Despite Food Stamp assistance and several other programs the government offers, the state of Florida has 16.2% of hunger, and is one the seven states with the highest percentages.

In south Florida, local hunger is an under laying effect of unemployment where the most affected are children and adults over the age of 65. Most families in South Florida are unable to afford all the food they need. Children attend schools without the proper nourishment, which in the long run affects their academic performance. At times, lunch provided at schools is the only source of food they have access to. This leads to chronic malnutrition and other health problems.

On the other hand, many people tend to associate hunger only to children, but the elderly are also affected. Seniors are unable to prepare food for themselves or even go grocery shopping. To many, the money from retirement is not enough to afford all the food necessary. Due to their age and existing health issues, hunger leads to diabetes, malnutrition and even depression.

Many organizations are dedicated to provide aid to the less fortunate. Meals on Wheels, a nation wide organization distributes food from the Food Bank. One example at the local level is the Feeding South Florida Organization; they distribute food supplies and create awareness on the issue. Other examples are the Daily Bread Community Food Bank, Florida Association for Community Action, Florida Association, of Food Banks, Harry Chapin Food Bank, and Society of St. Andrew among others. In addition, grocery stores such as Publix provide aid by donating food and promoting sponsorship to families in need.

However, as global citizens more people should take part in lessening the impact of hunger in the United States. As a developed country, hunger should not be a major issue as it is. We are not as affected from natural disasters as other countries, the government is stable enough to provide necessary aid. The wealth is poorly distributed among the richest. In the United States, the problem is not lack of food but poor access to it. Although, it is due to the overall economy, more programs and aid should be available to those in need. It is necessary to educate families and the elderly about the many programs the government offers and how to apply to them. The government itself should assure access to affordable nutrition nationwide and social security programs. From a bad economic crisis the prices on food should not increase, or at least not the basic nutritious foods such as proteins, fruits and dairy products.

At the community level, volunteering work should be imparted among neighbors in order to help areas of the community in need. Clubs at high schools and colleges should raise funds not merely to third-world countries, but to our own community.

In essence, it is ironic to see the United States among the wealthiest countries and one of the most recognized for philanthropists. Whenever there is a natural disaster or war, the United States is the first to provide aid and supplies. The focus of the government should turn a bit into the local level and to solving poverty and hunger in many states. If unemployment is a factor, then temporary aid should be available to families, so they don't suffer from hunger.

The global citizenship concept is to start from the community and expand; it is irrational to be helping Haiti, and African countries when our next door neighbor’s child attends school with an empty stomach.

  77. Wow, this is really sad. And the fact that is in south Florida, is even more. Not only this country, but also this state waste a lot of food. As environmental day approaches, we need to do something. Things such as raising money for the ones in needs is a good idea. It would be sad if we would be the ones asking for money on the streets, but not only sad, it just ... doesn't have words to describe. We must feel that we need to help this poor kids and families with no help, money and food. We also need to think that by wasting food, and throwing it away, we are not feeding someone because that could have been their meal. It is time to reflex. To people from all the ages.

  78. I want to start off by saying if one believes that hunger is a word that would never affect us, is clear show of ignorance. United States is one of the most powerful countries economically, and I imagine that even this country still is not exempt from famine. Also, by generalizing and saying that the vast North America does not have enough food to feed its entire population would brush the level of exaggeration, but if you would come into perfect reasoning we must argue that currently families are fighting with the sun on their backs to feed their families. For examples, it could be the current immigrants living in Florida, residents or citizens, but they are not strangers to the problem in question. Miles may be the ways to supply at least the state of Florida which is the main destination for thousands of families wanting to migrate. I would propose increasing farms and localize production, as well as investing in transportation and logistics. By doing this, we are facing the problem of fuel which cannot yet be solved, and on the other hand we could confront the increase in prices on products due to the reduction of distance between Sponsor and consumer. Another way would be to lower taxes and arbitrary laws that are affecting middle class businesses in order to decrease cost and process of buying and selling to these Floridian middle companies. Also, decreasing taxes and controlling laws would result in an increment of jobs and thus a major source of income for the family, who in turn pay taxes to the government which would be used to curb the crisis experienced by the country. In summary, the decrease in taxes would increase possibilities of jobs, and therefore through the taxes, the increase in the state income sources which gradually would decrease the federal budget deficit and the rise of food ‘prices.

  79. Extreme poverty is a disease that has spread to all parts of the world. To eradicate this epidemic is like fighting alcoholism, it lasts forever. However, if you can at least eliminate some alcohol addiction, the level of poverty in the world could be reduced one bit at a time. Poverty is a rather broad concept. Poor people in third world countries do not have the same outlook as a poor person living in a developed country. However, poverty will go on forever and is commonly defined as the lack of material possessions. Also, a good argument would be that poverty begins with bad management or shortage of resources in a particular country. The misappropriation of state funds by the government itself is the main factor that provokes this phenomenon called poverty. Examples can be found in countries like Mozambique, Cuba or the "colossal" Asian, China; country applauded for its industrial revolution that has taken place since the ruling communist leader Mao Zedong who died in the decade of the seventies. China has a poverty rate of ten percent and an estimated population of over 140 million poor Chinese citizens.
Therefore, a government that is not fraudulent, dictatorial or demagogue could avoid extreme poverty as existing in the African country of Mozambique. In this underdeveloped state, life expectancy is about forty years due to the inhumane conditions in which their inhabitants live. It is a country decimated by (AIDS), and even injured by preventable diseases like malaria, dengue and tuberculosis. However, Mozambique is a large fishing net exporter of seafood, has mines of precious stones and diamonds, and small reserves of gold and oil. This African nation is a very rich country but terribly governed. The President Armando Guebuza is nothing more than a puppet that ignores the suffering of his people and instead increases his bank account every day. In conclusion, a rich country is not synonym of a wealthy population, it represents mainly South America and Africa the existence of indolent and debtor governments of their people.

  81. Poverty is the principal aspect of hunger.Poor people have minimum resources and a very low income distribution which limits the accessibility to food.Poor people don't have the access to own their farms in order to work them and establish small businesses and make their money raise;so that can only depend on government aid for those that are unemployed. As of Feeding America Organization statistics, only in the United States in 2011, 46.2 million people were in poverty. 9.5 million families were in poverty 26.5 million of people between ages 18-64 were in poverty. 3.6 million seniors of 65 and older were in poverty.50.1 million of Americans lived in food insecure households ,33.5 million adults and 16.7 million children.

  82. “There are 1.02 billion undernourished people in the world today. That means one in nearly six people do not get enough food to be healthy and lead an active life. Hunger and malnutrition are in fact the number one risk to the health worldwide — greater than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined. Among the key causes of hunger are natural disasters, conflict, poverty, poor agricultural infrastructure and over-exploitation of the environment. Recently, financial and economic crises have pushed more people into hunger.

As well as the obvious sort of hunger resulting from an empty stomach, there is also the hidden hunger of micronutrient deficiencies which make people susceptible to infectious diseases, impair physical and mental development, reduce their labor productivity and increase the risk of premature death.

Hunger does not only weigh on the individual. It also imposes a crushing economic burden on the developing world. Economists estimate that every child whose physical and mental development is stunted by hunger and malnutrition stands to lose 5-10 percent in lifetime earnings.

Among the Millennium Development Goals which the United Nations has set for the 21st century, halving the proportion of hunger people in the world is top of the list. Whereas good progress was made in reducing chronic hunger in the 1980s and the first half of the 1990s, hunger has been slowly but steadily rising for the past decade.

Indeed, despite the noble efforts of the WFP and tens of thousands of individuals, World hunger remains a grave problem. The compelling truth is this: never before in human history has such a large percentage of our species—nearly 20 percent—been malnourished. Each year, between 40 million and 60 million people around the world die from hunger and related diseases. Sadly, the toll is heaviest on the world’s children.

  84. I'm not surprised that in Miami we have such a high rate of poverty and hunger. As a tourist if you come to Miami you might only see the hotels, nice cars and expensive restaurants, and not realize what the reality is; but if you live in this city it is not very difficult to realize that a lot of people are struggling to make it at the end of the month to be able to pay not only for food but also rent and utilities. In many cases families need to make sure they have enough money to pay for rent and utilities before they can even think in buying food.
I believe that hunger issues in Miami have a lot do with a group of different factors that affect the financial stability of the resident of this community like immigration, government corruption, the high difference of academy and cultural levels of the community and the style and way of living of the majority of the middle high and rich class of the city.
Miami is geographically located in an area that brings the attention of millions of people mainly from central and South America. This people come here with the hope to provide a better life for their family, but in many cases end up struggling to find a job and provide the basic needs for their family because of a language barrier and also the lack of academics and cultural levels they attained in their country. However, Miami also attracts a different sort of migration, from people who come from the United States from the northern states who may be homeless and are looking for a place to live where they are less exposed to the elements like snow. This contributes to a shortage of low-skilled jobs and to a greater number of homeless people who go hungry.

  85. Food security has been possible when individuals have enough access of it in order to live an active and healthy lifestyle. This access is prime to a child’s nutrition and development. In order for us to discover the method for food security we have to evaluate a main factor. A nation’s availability for food. This is measured per capita in dietary energy supply. We must be made aware that food availability depends on one’s food supplies. For example, countries that contain low food supplies such as those in Asia and Africa. On the opposite spectrum, countries in Latin America and Caribbean have prosperous percentile of food supplies. Bringing the next subtopic in this issue is a child’s nutrition with the quality of health they are being exposed too in their environment. This includes access to safe and clean water, current health services, and guidance to proper sanitation. These improvements listed have shown to improve malnutrition in neighboring countries. By the reduction of malnutrition many illnesses will be reduced as well.
In terms of addressing national income and democracy, Per capita national income growth is a must for health care services and food availability. Thus at the same time improving the environment’s quality, research has shown that improvements in national gross income per person is extremely powerful aid in reducing child malnutrition. During years of the 70’s and 90’s, it’s been calculated that half of the total percentage in child malnutrition came from growth in income (Bank). We must note that as the countries in high percentage of child malnutrition prosper economically. So will the food availability.

  86. Millions of people around the world suffer from hunger. This problem has increased as a result of climate change caused by global warming, the global economic crisis, the escalating food prices, among other factors. However, when one thinks of hungry people, what comes to mind are the poor in Africa, Asia or Latin America. It is almost impossible to think that in a rich industrialized country like the United States there are a large number of people at risk of hunger. United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) reported that 16 million children in the U.S. live in food insecure households. According to household food security in the United States, more than 1 in 5 children are at risk of hunger. The report also found nearly 49 million Americans in total, or 1 in 6, are of food insecure. More and more people in developed countries suffer hunger. Due to the economic crisis there more low-income families who don’t have enough money to buy the food they need.
When you look around and see all these people who have received layoff, and the amount of people who are working for half the wages for which they used to work, then you realize that is not a surprise that so many households suffer from food insecurity. Maybe we all know at least one person who is struggling with hunger, but people refuse to speak about the problem because they don’t want anybody to know it. When families don’t have enough money to make an end meet, they start cutting the food expenses. These parents buy the cheaper food not the more nutritious for their children. Sometimes these kids do not eat the five recommended time during the day. Children with bad nutrition do not receive all the nutrient necessaries for a good development, thus they have less energy to play, low academic performance, and get sick often.
Fortunately, there are federal programs to help low-income families having access to a best nutrition. A high number of low-income families receive food stamps, and there are programs such as WIC and the school lunch program which help parents to provide a better nutrition to their children. Across the country, there are numerous nonprofit organizations that help families facing hunger; for example, feeding America backpack program gives to the children a backpack with nutritious food, the day before weekend or holidays. However, on an individual scale, I think we can do more. The modern life goes on high speed, and the people are concentrated on their own problems. However, we must find time to help people in needs. We can donate food or donate our time as volunteers in organizations destined to feed poor people. Sometimes we say we don’t have time, but most of the people have time to spend hours gossiping on Facebook. There a fast way of helping others, and it can take just some minutes of our time; we just have to open the link of the food bank collation and pay a bag of food, for just $10 dollars, which will help a family in need; easy like that.

  87. I would have never imagined that we were 12 on the list. I feel that it all starts with the economy and the more people that are losing jobs, the more families that are suffering. Today it is a lot harder to get a job then it was twenty to thirty years ago, so if someone that got a job at a company right out of high school 20 years ago gets laid off what are they supposed to do without a college education. I am not saying this is everyone's situation but this may be some peoples. A one income household for three to four people just does not cut it. The world is a much more expensive place now days. This being said where we start is by attempting to make jobs for people. Yet this is a little unrealistic so we do what we can. We donate food, money, supplies to those who need. We have so much that we do not use, so much that goes to waste but in our heads we say we will use that or we will eat that eventually but in realty we never do. It has been said that the people who have nothing will give up what they have to help someone else but the people who have everything will hesitate. Let's prove this statement wrong let's start with those of us who are more fortunate and give to those who are not. We may not be able to help everyone but if everyone of us helps at least one person then we could make a big impact.

  88. I am going to start with a fact “America uses more water to create loans, that it uses to create all of the crops in the country”, though is a pretty scarce resource, we can use only 1% of the water on our planet, most of it is salt water that we cannot use to drink or irrigate crops and 70% of our fresh water is frozen on glaciers, so that is that. What about food? The worlds combined food output could feed around eleven billion people and yet there are one billion people who need food. Those are two of the most pathetic and infuriating thing about our planet.
What does that mean? were is all that food going? you guessed it, to the garbage. Food that is not consumed is not given to the poor like it should be done it is just tossed away in the trash. So where do we start? well I think is obvious, by for once not throwing everything away, and recognizing and understanding that we do not have to go to Africa to give people that need it some food, there is people starving right here in our own state and we are letting it happen. Don’t blame the government, don’t blame the news this is our own place and we made it how it is.
So lets get our asses up from those couches and lets start giving what we don’t use, that is my humble opinion.
