WORLD ENVIRONMENT DAY AT MIAMI DADE COLLEGE’S INTERAMERICAN CAMPUS

·

World Environment Day is an annual event created by the United Nations Environment Programme.  The goal of this event is to become “the biggest and most widely celebrated global day for positive environmental action.”  World Environment Day celebrations began in 1972, and since then have become a primary way for the United Nations to stimulate global environmental awareness and encourage political attention and action regarding environmental issues.

The theme for this year’s World Environment Day is “Think·Eat·Save” and is aimed at reducing food waste and food loss as well as reducing our “foodprint.”  According to the UN Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted. This is equivalent to the same amount produced in the whole of sub-Saharan Africa.  At the same time, 1 in every 7 people in the world go to bed hungry and more than 20,000 children under the age of 5 die daily from hunger.  Hunger and food availability are still among the world’s leading environmental, health, and social welfare issues.

On June 5th World Environment Day will be celebrated at Miami Dade College’s InterAmerican Campus.  Planned events include a screening of the film Dive!, a poster session highlighting student work, a hunger banquet with discussion, talks and demos on local organic gardening efforts, collection of food for the Daily Bread Food Bank,  and more!  Miami Dade College students, faculty, staff and administration are all invited to participate.

  1. It's incredible to see the amount of food that is wasted every year, and in contrast, the huge amount of people around the world that is hungry.

    1. It is incredible the amount of food that goes wasted every year in contrast to the people that are going hungry . In America people wanted everything bigger and in large amounts and this includes their food. Most of the time people purchase more food than what they really consume and the rest of the food just goes to waste. I think that this mentality needs to change and we need to become costumed to just purchasing the right amount that we need and donating the rest that we don’t need to others that are In need.

    2. I agree, its crazy how much food gets thrown away every single day. i used to work at a hotel, sometimes left overs of event would be given to employees during lunch so it wont be thrown away! still, at some point food is still thrown away when there is thousands of people out there who dig through garbage cans to get other peoples left overs. its sicking. some people dont care about these things and continue with life like nothing

    4. It’s an issue that’s been around for a while, but a lot of people are still ignorant about the subject. It’s sad, really. This issue doesn’t even demand a lot when it comes to contributing. A majority of people playing their part can make a big difference in the lives of many.

    5. Yeah the same thing happens with restaurants ,supermarkets, fast food restaurants. i believe this has something to do with some kind of law, so if the food by any reason is bad, contaminated or whatever and something happens to the person that received the food, this person can sue the company who gave him the food. So they kind of avoid that , just in case. Also as far as i know there are many other companies that donate their about to expire food to camilus house and the jail system if im not wrong. How the process works i do not know , but it happens. The problen is with what is considered not to be a huge amount of food, or with about to expired food without the means of distribute the food. The county should be more involved in this.

    6. I agree, the problem is that the companies which take their products off the shelves at grocery stores and obliged to throw them out because of the expiration dates. Some of the items are used for dog food manufacturing. I'm sure all of you have at one time or other consumed something 1-2 days after the expiration date and it is perfectly fine. If these products could get out to the needy it would make a huge difference....we just need to convince the FDA!

    7. Food goes in the waste dump on a regular basis. It’s amazing how each year this waste increases; more people are hungry each and every day. In the United States of America, individuals want the best food out there and in large portions.

    8. My position in all of this starting today could change . I am going to start to do more for people who need my help . I swear after I saw this problems I changed my mind about what is really important in life . Before today I had never imagined that a lot of people had been suffering about all this issues through the years . I would like that everybody gets conciseness about what is happening and start helping each other to have a change in our world .

    9. All you people said is true. We all waste food, and we don't even realize it. We have to stop that because there are kids, families dying all around the world because of being poor and not having food. We have to do something. Is just depressing to see little kids asking and begging for money on the streets. They weren't born to suffer. They were born to live a happy life.

  2. Hard to believe at times the amount of young individuals who go hungry, and die of hunger all over. How many Americans are mainly focused on celebrity news, rather than news based on the poverty levels in other nations.

    1. I agree with you that many people in the world are not informed about the number of humans thatare going hungry all over the world. I think that we should blame our selves for not trying to do research on what is going on all over the world regarding hungry . I also think that people not being informed is because the media tends to focus more on things like celebrity gossip or the superficial Hollywood world. Being known that the media is where people get most of their information the media should focus more on informing the masses on such issues that are going on like world hunger . Things that really matter and that can help make a difference if people just get the information.

    2. While there are some celebrities who do contribute to causes, such as George Clooney, and Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, the media doesn’t really focus on their humanitarian work as much as focusing on their social lives. Since celebrities like them have a large fan base, if the media focused a lot more on their humanitarian work, the fans would be able to learn more about issues that are troubling the world and how they can contribute. In fact, they’d probably be eager to fight for the cause that their favorite celebrity is endorsing.

    3. Im sorry to disagree with natalie on this , but this so called celebritie organizations are mainly nothing more that good public relations. Just like a cover of a magazine, most of this artists just care about themselves and how they look.I bet you they can actually do more than they do. For , example why instead of calling a press conference to promote their latest movie, clothes, perfume or whatever they are selling , just call a press conference to talk about this kind of issues , and many more that affects the whole planet? Im very sure they will get a lot of attention for this.

    4. It is true that on the TV, we just see the news about celebrities. Most of the time, we just focus on the celebrities life. We know everything about them. It is sad that we know so much with the celebrities especially their problems, but we don't know about our country's problems. Do you think the people who watch are interested to this issue about hunger and food wasting or they prefer to watch the models and celebrities. It is a good idea for the school to start with and to emphasize about this problems here and in the other countries.

    5. The part of the world that is in shadows, gets ignored, the media only shows the good and the bad of our little perfect world in the Americas, but it does not bothers in including the faded part of the world, the hell in that so many people live, war, hunger, starvation, genocide, it is still there but they just hide it for you now.

    6. It is so true about our nation being focused on celebrities instead of our growing poverty issue. I think we are a nation of, "if it is not affecting me, then I am not bothered". Unless it hits you or someone you know, then people just keep on their day to day path. That is sad, we are all human beings and each one of us needs a hand once in awhile. We should all be open to helping each other. I agree the media should focus more on the "real" issues in our nation then what the celebrities are doing. They have the means to support themselves. I like the idea of the schools approaching the subject. Usually if the children hear about it, they go home and tell their parents. That may get the ball going.

    7. I think that hunger is one of the factors that more attack us in this century. Thanks to this sad reality children under five are dying every day due to bad nutrition and diseases caused by lack of food and the poor condition in which they are living. And our countries are more concerned about the lives of celebrities instead of being worried about the situation of a part of the world which is suffering of lack of food. The media shows us what they want us to see, but they are not show what is really happening in the world today about this big issue. I think we should help each other and the media should realize what is real important to focus on it instead of being more interested about what millionaire people do every day. We must begin to sensitize our children and ourselves about this situation which is not a game and is really dangerous and painful for people that are passing for it.

    8. I believe that if media spent more money and time focusing in the issues that really matter like obesity in America and hunger all over the world life would be a little sweeter for everyone. It is ridiculous the contrast of illness caused by overeating vs the illness caused by hunger. Yet the media money and focus are on the private lives of the richest people of the planet. They do not need our concern.

    9. Many people see global hunger as scarcity in only one specified country. That is local hunger, which is constantly mistaken with global hunger. Is not completely correct, since it is global, meaning around the world, involving more than one country. In this world, about 925 million people are hungry. Every day, worldwide almost 16,000 children die from hunger-related causes. A person suffering from hunger is a person in need. Nobody was born to suffer; we were all born to live happy, and with no needs.

The more the word gets out, the better the chances are of obtaining participation.

    2. Rice.com is a great example of how an issue like world hunger doesn’t demand a lot from people. I’ve also heard of certain websites donating books to schools if you buy from their site. Creating a local concept where food is donated to people in need would be a great idea, although I don’t know what we could do. Possibly have the community host an event.

    3. I agree with you Nathalie. I think the problem is that the word is not getting out to enough people. I also think its important that we start teaching kids from a young age that they have to learn to give back. For everyone one thing they get, they should give something back, either to their community or to a charitable organization.

  5. Having the World Environment Day event at the InterAmerican Campus is a great idea because it allows the college students of the campus to educate themselves about an issue that’s rampant in the world. This event can open the eyes of people who, in turn, will then open more eyes through the dialogue they’ll share with friends and family. World hunger is an issue that affects many people who aren’t as privileged as us, and the 1.3 billion tons of food that are wasted yearly can and should be put to better use. This food can benefit those in need, and the difference that it’ll be making in their lives is a vital one. With this event people can also seek information on how they can volunteer and contribute to this cause that has gained worldwide participation from everybody.

    1. I think that even though the event at the interamerican campus is a step in the right direction, is just not enough. Why not go massive with this. The event needs more advertising. Miami Dade College should make of this event a big one.Why not advertise it everywhere, just like they advertise themselves on tv? Why not do the event on every campus? How about creating a special commission to go to every class and educate people about this huge issue that affects us all? After all they are the biggest college in the county. Im sure that after a massive event like the one im proposing, many more schools will follow suit , and join the revolution ;).

    2. I agree with you that this event that Miami Dade College is hosting should receive more publicity in order to obtain participation from a greater audience. Had it not been for my Sociology Professor I would not have known about it. I agree with you that this should not be limited to just one campus, but we should do something on a wider scale as the problem is quite extensive. The U.S. is one of the leaders in food waste. The sad part is that as a country we also have a high percentage of poverty and persons going hungry each day. It seems a bit hypocritical doesn't it?

      Delete
    3. I also agree that this event can be the first step for the people to realize that most of us don't have food to eat and the rest are just wasting the food. I think also that many food are wasting because of the food that is serving for example in a restaurant or fast food. The food we buy in the restaurant is too much for one person only. If they can just decrease the serving, it can decrease wasting of the food, and it also decrease the obesity.

    4. I am in agreement with many who support the World Environment Event Day because there are people who are not aware about the number of humans who are starving across the world. Therefore, research should be conducted to see the starving statistics. If this subject is not discussed then more people will be unaware about what is truly happening.

  6. I have been to Haiti twice since the earthquake that devastated Port au Prince (back in Jan 2012 and I just returned yesterday). This is truly a place where you see the need for a better distribution of food. When you visit there, you get a true appreciation of how much we are wasting in the U.S. not only in relation to food, but in relation to clothing, paper, furniture and so many other things. With the left overs we throw away on our plates each day, so many children could be fed. I wish more Americans would stop for one moment and take a look around us and realize that we need to do something to stop the waste and help the environment. We don't realize how lucky we are. Even many of us that think we should have more, have much more than many others in the world do.

  7. Nearly 98 percent of worldwide hunger exists in underdeveloped countries. Hunger is often passed from mother to child. Each year, 17 million children are born underweight because their mothers are malnourished. Almost 1 in every 15 children in developing countries dies from hunger. While hunger exists worldwide, 62.4 percent of the hunger exists in Asia/South Pacific. More than 20 percent of children in Asia and Africa are underweight for their age.

  8. Food is wasted throughout the entire food chain: by farmers, by the food industry, by retailers, by caterers and by consumers. The reasons are diverse and sector specific. The main causes are: Lack of awareness, lack of shopping planning, confusion about "best before" and" use by" date labels, lack of knowledge on how to cook with leftovers (households).Standard portion sizes, difficulty to anticipate the number of clients (catering);Stock management inefficiencies, marketing strategies (2 for 1, buy 1 get 1 free), aesthetic issues (retail), overproduction, product & packaging damage (farmers and food manufacturing); inadequate storage (whole food chain), and Inadequate packaging. However, we can help to reduce food waste by serve small amounts of food with the understanding that everybody can come back for more once they've cleared their plate. This is especially helpful for children, who rarely estimate how much they can eat at once. Any leftovers can be cooled, stored in the fridge and used another day. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, food leftovers are the single-largest component of the waste stream by weight in the United States. Food waste includes uneaten food and food preparation scraps from residences or households, commercial establishments like restaurants, institutional sources like school cafeterias, and industrial sources like factory lunchrooms. Over 12 percent of the total municipal solid waste generated in American households was food scraps and less than three percent was recovered.

Unfortunately, hunger is closer to us than what we like to think; it is amazing how many people are deprived of a hot meal, although, there is so many resources available, but not everybody is either aware or qualify, or even have the means to go to the places and go thorough with the required processes. A lot of people in our society depends on others to be able to obtain food, and believe it or not, many kids go to school hungry for lack of food. The other side of the coin is even more sad, the food wasted in restaurants, and supermarkets is enough to feed all of those hungry in our neighborhoods.

Governments of different countries have realized that the issue of hunger is a problem that affects everyone, and we cannot be insensitive to this, so they implement strategies through many organizations responsible for hunger and malnutrition worldwide. These strategies have been created not only reduce this problem as much as possible, but also they are looking for alternatives to solve this problem in the medium or long term. In my opinion, that is not enough we need to take the problem of global to specific, we as community can do many things to help not only to reduce hunger but also to make a more rational use of our natural resources that impact on caring for our environment. Wasting resources including food, the way we are doing brings only negative consequences for our environment and our future, plus it's not fair that while others die begging something to eat, here the food is dumped in an uncontrolled manner.

  11. I think its part of our culture to live in excess. We don't take the time to acknowledge the less pleasant parts of this world so as to not disrupt the comfortable bounds of our "reality". How many people take the time to soak soups can in water so then they can be recycled? Do we think about the 800 liters of water we consume per day? Did you just find this website to get extra credit for a LIT class? I have to admit I did…
Even the purpose of buying organic produce at a grocery store or at a market is defeated by all the pesticides that are used or the pollutants that soak in the soil.
I think MDC's effort to increase awareness of these issues is incredibly important. Most people have a very small sociological awareness and giving them access to these harrowing facts can hopefully spark some change. I personally made the decision to become a vegan because until then I had no idea how many gallons of water it takes to make one hamburger. I compost so I don’t have to purchase soil from stores like Home Depot (their soil is horrible, it’s full of chemicals). I plant what I can, which is difficult while living in an urban area, but you have to do the little that you can do.
Another thing you can do is support business that helps organizations or charities. Always double check when a big chain business advertises giving a certain percent away, because most of the time it’s a lie.
Just take it from Dr. Seuss - "Unless someone like you cares a whole awful lot, nothing is going to get better. It's not."

  12. I believe that one way to address the food waste problem is to inform the communities; educated persons make better choices. There is a lot of useless programs in television, and countless paper wasted with no important information. Campaigns should be made to inform people through radio, TV,and papers.
When elections time comes, instead of putting out so much garbage, politicians would go further with intelligent topics, such as food waste.

  14. According to an article in IRIN (http://www.irinnews.org/Report/96815/CLIMATE-CHANGE-A-four-degree-warmer-world ), there is much alarm over the rising global temperature. Apparently, scientists predict a four-degree rise, not the previously predicted two-degree rise, by the end of this century. Even though the two-degree rise is of grave concern, the four-degree rise would be devastating because of its effect on global drought and rising coastal waters. As we all know, global warming is caused by greenhouse gas emissions, which are still not under control. What is it going to take for us to realize that all global citizens must participate in a concerted effort to reduce our carbon footprint? For me, all it takes is looking at a picture of Beijing’s skyline (http://en.mercopress.com/2013/02/14/beijing-s-pollution-alarms-neighbours). What do you think?

These people do not realize that to change this it is going to take a group effort of global size. Everyone is going to have to participate and start to do their part to save our home, our planet. I am not sure if people actually realize that we only have one planet and we do not get another one if we mess it up. It is not like a car that if you crash it, you can get another one. This is it and we need to start realizing that and stepping up to do any little thing that we can. Whether it is recycling, conserving water, planting trees, using a bike instead of a car or even using eco-friendly cleaning supplies everything help. The time is now, start doing your part to save our planet.

  16. There many ways we can help world ,is one of the most important things to me is people that can volunteer, the church I attend we travel to other countries to help poor countries. On May 3-10 I will be traveling to Honduras to help in a foster, I have collected cloths and food for the children. I believe anyone can make a big impact to the world and I know by me helping it will be great .Honduras is one of the poorest countries in the world, I was born in Honduras and my family and I went through a hard situation. But when my parents move here it created my life, now I can give to them. If we will think about others more the world would be a little better. Some teens rather go on a big vacation then give to others. Volunteer can help so much , we need to get together has a world and help we waste too much , for example, Jeneece is a young lady who has made a big difference to the world she created a home for sick children and their families the place is called “Jeneece Place”. Anyone can make a big difference. There’s people out there that are actually trying to make a difference this girl is young , why can’t us college students help.

  17. It is depressing, that in the 21 first century, is hunger the leading cause of death. In a world of McDonald's, Coca Cola, iPhones and BMWs is incredible that we even have that problem, millions of pound the food that go to the trashcan every day, we would think that we have food to spare, but there is still millions that die for a reason that we will never be involved in. You may ask, why does this happens? Because people simply just do not care (I am generalizing of course there are a few people that care), people are selfish and yes you are probably one of them. Is incredible how the world has developed, when we could easily give the food that we do not consume, well it seems that is better to let it rot than to give it to an innocent child to feel his belly before going to sleep. But who am I to say anything I am in this side too, and the struggles do not even touch me anymore, that is the core of it all, if they where our sisters or brothers or parents, sons or daughters we would car, we would provide the, we wouldn't let them starve.

    1. In fact, I believe that we should blame the community for not informing us about the world hunger. Therefore, it is good to do some research in advance and conduct this event in order to make the society aware of the global hunger. Also, this should also be stressed globally in the media. This is where most people get their information from; precisely this one: world hunger. This event can be really helpful in order to make a huge different in people’s lives.

    2. In my opinion we need many events like this to raise awareness in a greater number of people in our community about this serious problem, I'm sure many people want to help and contribute, but sometimes they lack knowledge and guidance, I think that the media should also take a more active role in promoting this type of event, and everything related to the hunger that many sufferers around the world and our city is no exception; we have here people who need our help but it is important to be told people what to do. It is also important to call the attention of the politicians of our communities, achieve their commitment to work towards reducing as possible the problems related to hunger and work more for our environment. They can organize more activities that involve our children in order to create awareness about what we have today caring for them and future generations in order to have a healthy life in the future.

  19. We can make several ways for saving food, as are the following systems like utilization of saving food as the Food Banks. For decades, these services collect food discarded by supermarkets to support vulnerable communities with redistribution. Latin America and the Caribbean without Hunger, contributes to the development of these banks and promotes laws that favor food donation process known as the Good Samaritan. In addition, addition, this will change the vision to promote the food waste and garbage to see them as products of economic value and positive environmental externalities. In this sense, the municipalities are the key players to establish regulations and provide facilities to reduce food waste and to promote reuse.

  20. Unbelievable! We waste so much of everything, food should not be one of the things we waste. It is such a necessity for survival. All the people that are hungry and the children that are dying. That should not be happening. I am so glad that the "United Nations Environment Programme" has created this event. I hope the whole world participates. We all need to be more aware and conscious of what we consume, and try not to waste. Above it states that the waste adds up to the sub-Saharan Africa. I know that is an example to show the amount but that is such a large area. That area alone, already houses a large amount of people that are hungry. Here in the US we have families that are starving. We are an abundant country with a lot of means to support ourselves. I know there are programs in place that help feed children in schools. I don't think people are aware of them. We need to have these programs made more aware to the public. The media should be talking about it on a daily basis. We as a nation should work together like this World Environment Day and help get the word out to everyone. Let's all come together to help in this matter.

Coming from a corporate background; seeing this "food waste" and food being thrown out to basically control the market and keep big corporations like Walmart profitable saddens me and as well gets me angry. Seeing first hand and experiencing going to bed hungry and having several friends of mine going to bed hungry in their youth upsets me that even corporations continue to want to profit from these world wide issue crisis. As stated in my essay i recently submitted changing to "eating locally" wont change greenhouse gas emissions nor solve this issue, its a picture in all of this put together. Corporations are already branding themselves with being "local" and "Organic" competitors literally being branded with "Farmer's Market" and " Whole Foods" and eventually will be bought out by their top competitor (Walmart). We need to focus on social, environmental and economic issues as well instead of just focusing on food mileage. "A grain of sand can't make a beach, a group of grains of sand makes a beach." That being said we all need to work together in making a change!

  22. "Every year 1.3 billion tons of food is wasted" that is a ridiculous amount of food. Can you imagine how many lives would be saved if instead of throwing away the food it would be put to good use. Restaurants shouldn't throw away they should donate it to homeless shelters in their community. That would be a great start , obviously shipping the wasted food to somewhere like Africa would do more harm than good.Because that would just produce more emission from burning fossil fuels. But that doesn't mean the food should be utilized here. When most people think of hunger their mind automatically goes to Africa. when the reality is that in your own community people are suffering from hunger. Also donating food to food banks, is a great idea. All you have to do is pick up an extra can of beans or corn or whatever you can at the supermarket. That small thing can make a big difference when 2,000 people are doing it.That alone can have a major impact on the community.

  23. Hunger is a real issue around the world. Every day there are thousands of people of all ages dying because lack of food. United States is the most powerful country in the world but believed or not there are a lot of people suffering for hunger because economic problems. Every day we see people on the street looking for something to eat because they lost their job and they don’t have money to provide food for their families or give it to them a decent life. Besides that, we are part of this issue too because we waste every day a lot of food without conciseness. While in Africa which is the first country in the world suffering for hungry, people die, here in United State all restaurants discard the food without any consciousness.

  24. I definitely agree that in this country the waste is endless. I grew up in Brazil until I was 15 years old and I remember when I was a child that no one was allowed to leave any food on the plate. You serve, you eat. That was my mom's motto. I always thought that I ate poorly comparing to what kids eat here in the US. Now I know it is totally the opposite. We always had good wholesome meals. We had at least 3 kinds of vegetable for every meal and meat was only twice a week and there was no waste.
The kids in this country get to choose what they eat and therefore they never learn to eat the right thing. When something heathy presented to them it is automatically garbage because they will not eat.
Also the serving portions are super sized in all restaurants and that always means, waste.
I believe that we have to teach our kids about these pressing matters early in life and they will know will always remember. I know I do!!!

  25. I enjoyed reading this post and know that our school is involved in the way of making our society a better place to live. According to the post World Environment Day celebrations began in 1972 I was not at all aware of it. I have to thank my teacher for giving us assigmnets that actually opens our eyes and gives us the opportunity to at least know that we can make a difference in this battle. I plan on participating and doing my share.

  26. I didn't have any idea that an event like this was made. This is a really good thing to get educated about. It is pretty crazy the amount of food wasted in the United States, and knowing that other nations can feed of our waste sounds even creazier. this is a really good article to get educated about food consumption, which most people are not aware.

  27. Global hunger is something that involves all of us, the poor, the rich, only by the simple fact that it is something that is happening to us, to the people that surrounds us, to the world we all live in. Africa is one of the mayor continents affected with millions of families with no food to eat, and here in America you see restaurants throwing away their food, and how people waste it. Global Hunger is no more that hunger affecting many people in this world because of scarcity of food and resources worldwide.

  28. Malnutrition has been responsible for more than half of all child death worldwide. These malnourished children have developed lower resistance towards disease; they are more prone to death from common child ailments like diarrheal disease and respiratory illness. Though the percentage of children who are malnourished has gradually declined over the last 27 years, the actual account is still increasing in underdeveloped countries worldwide. Malnutrition has caused a great deal of physical and emotional suffering. It’s been proved that this current issue has been raising infant and child deaths all over the world. We have to become more aware that aiding in combat of child malnutrition is of great importance to our future. It’s of great essence that the causes be understood.
Child malnutrition causes are known to be very complex. Research has clearly shown the top determinants broken down into several levels. These determinants are influenced by three factors: adequate care for mothers and their children, food security and a healthy adequate environment. In order to help with these concerning factors we have to consider food availability and the quality of the health environment provided. Let’s not forget our national income and democracy which will be of aid in this crisis.

  29. It is sad to think all the food we wasted, and the high amount of hungry people on the world. We all are guilty of buying more food that we really need. We should change our eating and buying food habits. We should put on the dish the food the food that we really go to eat and make the grocery one time a week; in that way, the food does not rot. Restaurants’ owners should get awareness about all the hungry people could be feed with all the food they throw away.

  30. I think that this is going to be a great way to raise awareness. Doing this event at Miami Dade College is going to bring awareness not only to so many people because of how big the Miami Dade College network is but to many different age groups as well because it is so diverse. I think we all know that there are people in the world going hungry, I mean I see it everyday driving down the road and there are people with signs asking for money so that they can eat but I do not think that many realize the severity on a global scale. I know I did not. It is really sad and heart wrenching to think about all of those people especially the children that go hungry every day. I mean who could have imagined that there are that many children going hungry and then 20,000 of them dying each day and that is only including the children under 5. Can you really imagine how many more from the ages of 6 and up? I have no words for how horrible this is. What is even worse is to know that most of us play a part in that. If I were to sit here and think of all the left over’s that just sat in the refrigerator, did not get eaten and got thrown away I could have fed tons of people. This has really opened my eyes to what is going on in the world. I know that from now on I am going to do everything I can to not waste food and to help these people who are less fortunate then I am. You have to be thankful for everything you have because you could have been one of the people who were not as fortunate.

  31. Think.Eat.Save is geared largely toward industrialized nations in the Americas, Europe, and certain parts of Asia, where 300 million tons of food are wasted every year. One study found the U.S. wastes 40 percent of its food, to the tune of $165 billion a year. (Other research found school lunches are part of that problem.) [1] Among the most widely wasted food products are vegetables, seafood, and cereals.

Unfortunately, when it comes to food waste, the problem isn’t just a malodorous garbage pile in the kitchen. Wasted food means wasted water, energy, and land, plus all the trash that builds up from discarded packaging and the greenhouse gases emitted during production and disposal processes.

The good news: Just making people aware of all the food they’re about to toss can significantly reduce the amount that’s wasted. Try spreading the word to friends and family and see if that garbage can doesn’t shed a few pounds.
