Four Degrees Instead of Two

According to an article in IRIN (http://www.irinnews.org/Report/96815/CLIMATE-CHANGE-A-four-degree-warmer-world ), there is much alarm over the rising global temperature. Apparently, scientists predict a four-degree rise, not the previously predicted two-degree rise, by the end of this century. Even though the two-degree rise is of grave concern, the four-degree rise would be devastating because of its effect on global drought and rising coastal waters. As we all know, global warming is caused by greenhouse gas emissions, which are still not under control.  What is it going to take for us to realize that all global citizens must participate in a concerted effort to reduce our carbon footprint? For me, all it takes is looking at a picture of Beijing’s skyline (http://en.mercopress.com/2013/02/14/beijing-s-pollution-alarms-neighbours).  What do you think?

  1. I think that global warming is an issue that is going to mark a generation, maybe not ours, but we are basically the creators of it, while global warming, is not only caused by greenhouse gas emissions, it is a natural issue too, the earth is moving diagonally in a way that the poles are being exposed this cause a faster melting of them, if you add the gas emissions, and the holes in the ozone layer, you have a catastrophe, that is not hitting us yet, but if we don't do anything It will hit our children or maybe even us in the future.

  2. People still don't understand the graveness of Global Warming People believe that: "Global Warming is a natural part of living being a natural process."; and these statements would be correct if they were not missing a certain peace of information. People have been emitting carbon on the atmosphere before the pre-industrial era, but when the pre-industrial era began people's carbon emissions on this environment increased exponentially. The production of cars, trains and airplanes and the distribution of these machines nation-wide, country-wide have really helped out to the development of Global Warming. The problem is that many of these machines run on burning fuel and when that happens, carbon is released into the atmosphere.

Still, I think we can help save a hopeless humanity. We need to seek wisdom and knowledge in order to become hopeful. We should all spread the word about the severe dangers of carbon emissions on the environment, how it's destroying the atmosphere, and about the dangers of Global Warming. There are a lot out there who ignorance is beyond belief, but by informing to others; you are making society less ignorant one step at a time.

By stopping emitting carbon altogether might have a positive effect on the atmosphere, but how do we do this? Surely, we wont stop the use of vehicles and our transport system which currently emits unnecessarily extremely harmful amounts of carbon. Instead we need to invest in change. I mean change in the way we obtain our energy to power our cars, trucks, houses, etc... We should aim at using alternative methods like solar power energy, or wind power energy to power todays daily usage items to decrease the carbon particles released into the atmosphere thanks to the burning of fossil fuels. Investing in this technology might seem like a waste in the short-run, but in the long-run it will benefit our well-being and our futures well-being.

Granted, global warming won't really affect us, but if we let this matter run its course unresolved then it will deeply devastate the children of our children. They’re going to look back at us and curse us for inheriting such a wretched world where something could have been done but wasn't because of our stupidity.

  3. The global warming is the effect of the constant exhaustion of planet's resources. Petroleum and its derivate is the principal target of the wealthy people whom see the economic gains behind all the process of buy and sell these products, and forget where those resources came from, and where finish all the pollution from the burns of those "energetic elements". The overheating is becoming step by step in the main problem of the planet and the humankind that anybody want to see. Everybody perceive the rise of temperatures in some regions that had never experienced that levels of heat but nobody are doing anything. Also, people become blind when the true as the melting of the Antarctic which affects the population of white bear and every day turn into new challenges for Scientifics who have to deal with this problem in order to keep the white bear specie alive.

  4. Global Warming has been happening for years. Society's problem is that they do not want to face reality. We are a nation of more is better. We want cars, luxury items; motorcycles, boats, yachts, electronics. All this requires industries which use green house gases. People say, it does affect me or it is not happening in my life time. They do not care. The problem here is that this has affected our weather patterns. Countries are experiencing droughts, floods, ice caps melt, more heat. This causes our food resources to deplete, more people go hungry, and animals start to die because they do not have the land they use to have in order to survive. Small islands and coast lines start to disappear. We need to stop being selfish and wake up and do something! I was reading the article on Beijing's pollution problem. They grew so fast that they did not take the time or care enough to try to prevent what has happened. People have respiratory problems. They have the means to start implementing policies to curb these emissions. The pollution has traveled to Japan. If they continue on this path, not only will it affect Japan but it will travel to other regions.

  5. I believe that more and more people need to start getting more aware of their carbon foot print. There are so monay things one can do recyle and try to use recycled items as much as possible. I am a strong believer that if we work together and work hard towards the goal of bringing down the major issues of gwhat is causing global warming thisngs would be much better with the cimate changes and all.

  6. Global warming is a problem that cannot be ignored any longer if we want our children to take a deep breath by the time they are 20. Government are not taking the right precautions and enforcing the right laws to control pollution. Species such as the polar bears are soon to be gone and food is becoming few and far to reach for many. Will it take another storm bigger than the Sandy storm for people to understand the importance of controlling and reducing our waste and also to help with recycling. We need to face the fact that in order to contain the situation we need to live with less and find new ways for energy that do not contaminate the environment any more that it already is.

  7. Al Gore has been talking about this for years. But he even to this day uses his nice expensive fossil fueled cars and jets to get around. Instead of talking about it take action and get something done. This will be like a snow ball effect the more people taking action the more that will get done. By working together and spreading the deeds and knowledge the sooner we will start seeing the change we seek!

  8. Looking at the skyline it seems unreal. I can't believe people actually live there. Its sad to see them with the mask on as they're trying to protect themselves for breathing in all those toxins, but in reality I don't think those mask are protecting them at all. Its not like they have a way to purify the unclean air they breathe in. They have no choice.

  9. I think this is an inconvenient truth that global warming has been increasing every year because greenhouse gases.I think we have the most resposibility about what has been happening because we dont believe this is a real problem. Each day will be worse if we do not help to stop this catastrophe our world could be in real danger. We should raise awareness about how to help improve life on our planet.Let us join our forces for a world free of global warming.

  10. globall warming is something very serious. Alot of people are not aware of it and somepeople simply dont want to face the reality of it. If more people were educate about it, changes would of already have a bigger impact in society. looking as the Beijing's skyline, the first thing that came to mind is how are we letting this happen. It doesnt look very same even to walk around.

  11. The skyline is unbelievable. Honestly, we are destroying our beautiful world. We have been polluting the the air with all types of toxins. Those people are suffering because they have to wear masks and don't have the ability so breath fresh air. Global warming needs to be stopped as soon as possible. Its causing a major effect on the world. If we don't stop it on time, in the future our children and families are going to suffer. Its a scary to even think how the world can be destroyed by these toxins. We don't want the coastal waters to rise. Its enough that Florida is below sea level. Imagine the damage this is going to make on countries and citizens that have build their whole life's in these places. Global warming has to be controlled and everyone has to join together to help.

  13. That skyline is a big WOW; I can’t believe that we are destroying our home, something what was once so beautiful. This semester in class I got assign to read this book called eaarth spelled with two a’s because we as humans changed its original name because of global warming. It talks about the first steps we took to change mother earth into what it has become now. But when I started to read the book eaarth I was very surprised that the earth was having all these changes due to human activity. Within the book you start to understand who gets effect and who affected us but also how we can change. In my mind global warming was always a problem but for future and present generation because we are the ones who continue the path that the pass has led us too. The generation of the pass and today are the ones who make matters worse for us and the future for giving us that mindset that we should just continue nothing will happen, WRONG. Look at what our home has become due to the mindset that nothing will happen. This place we live in now doesn’t even compare to a quarter of what earth was once ago. However, I think of global warming as a matter of not who started but how we can fix it or make it better. At the end global warming effect creators, non-creators, even problem solvers. Until we come as one global warming affect EVERY LIVING THING. But, sometimes I believe that we are so deep in with global warming that it’s going to take the nation as one to overcome this and I feel that’s going to be impossible to bring the nation together. Global warming is something that’s going to take the same amount of years that it took to create maybe even more too completely destroy it. But we need to change that old mindset of nothing and think with the mindset that global warming doesn’t control us we control global warming, I believe with that mindset we can start to help our home get better. It’s not about how many steps we take to destroy global warming, but about taking that first step to start.
-If you are interested to read the book it’s called EAARTH by Bill Mckibben. It a great book if you want to answer the question where did it all start?

  14. We all need to start taking action in order to repair the damage. Not wait for our leaders and state politics to catch up. We should begin in our own communities with creativity and collaboration on behalf of life, these actions may look minimal, but they hold our future. The consequences of not taking part should be rooted in our conscious and firm in our society. This awareness needs to cause a shift in how we experience our world. We need to see the world as sacred and see the sacred things in the world.

  15. Wow. That's all I have to say. After reading this, I just see how the world is changing. And is changing, but not in the right way. The world is getting old, and because of that, not only the climates, and weather that are coming are going to keep destroying the world, but us too with all this pollution. It may be a good thing that this is going to happen in a future where none of us would be alive. Hundreds and hundreds of years must past before this terrible atmospheric terror would come. I feel bad for the people living in Earth. We need to do something, i don't think is too late. Everything has and end, like life, we all live, and then die, but things are done to make our lives longer. That's what we need to do, help the Earth to stay alive for more time.

  17. Global warming or climate change is a matter that needs our attention. Over the years the earth has been under constant pollution from small and large manufacturing companies. All of these gases that is release from these factories is part of the global warming we are experiencing at this moment.
The Arctic is feeling these effects the most. The ice is rapidly disappearing. In order to slow down global warming, drastic measurement need to be taken. I think the government needs to implement different measurements in order to get people to cooperate.
Many people doesn’t know the danger we will face in few years from now due to global warming. I think there should be more ways of educating the people on this issue. We are still at time to slow global warming, I don’t think we can stop it from happen, but I do believe we can slow it down. This could only happen if we all make an effort to work together in preserving the earth. The damage that is being done now will affect our future.

  18. We must act now, for some reason the actions we are currently taking are not enough to stop this fast pace concern of carbon emission destroying our earth. We sometimes read about it, hear about it, but are we taking action? Unfortunately no and the answer is in our current carbon gas emissions which are very high. Activist are always advising us that it would be easier to act as a group, as a nation, but together. It's becoming more apparent on our everyday weather and seasons. Elongated summers and extended winters. All of this is not normal, it affects our crops, our animals breeding seasons, but primarily our food supply! It’s clearly seen in our current events in the news every day on how poorly we are doing in lowering our carbon emissions as a nation. Scientist had once predicted that this was for our next generation, for our grandchildren to become worrisome of. They were wrong; this has become a problem of the now. Not just for our grandchildren or for the next decade but for us for this decade and this generation. Our nation has tried multiple times to come together and come up with a resolution. These efforts have not been efficient or poorly applied. We must fix our mode of transportation, our usage of electricity, and many other wrongs we have made to this earth we all live in. is it easy? No it’s not as easy as 1, 2, 3, I’m afraid. If so, this issue would have been fixed long time ago from the first time it was addressed. It will take effort and commitment, but it will happen if we work together and as a team. I can’t stress this enough. We all live in this earth together so we are all going to fix it together our we’ll all fail together.

  19. Global warming is problem we are facing every day through the increment of the temperature levels and climatological disasters. This problem seems to do not have solution, and human beings are not realizing how much we have damaged the planet and environment with the industrialization. We have harmed so deeply the planet that the damage is irreversible, thus the prognostics for futures generations are not hopeful. We can stop the gas emission that we started, and we have to face the consequence. Worldwide we are experiencing food and water shortage, floods, storms, tsunamis, and animal species are disappearing because they can adapt to changes of the environment. Most of the people think in the present and not in what is to come in the future. Is time that we all start to think green; government and people in individual scale must take actions to minimize the dioxide carbon emission; we need to learn to save energy and recycle

  20. Global warming is the rise in the average temperature of earth’s atmosphere and oceans. It is a change for the worse, a change that is believed to be permanently changing the earth’s climate. There is great debate among many people, and sometimes in the news, on whether global warming is real (some call it a hoax) which is why the community tends to not do anything about prevention of global warming, but climate scientists looking at the data and facts agree the planet is warming. According to the article the earth is changing to a four degree warmer climate change. A four-degree temperature has many effects such as, triggering a decline global food stocks and sea-levels rises affecting hundreds of millions of people. But even with this entire knowledge people tend to not do anything about global warming. I believe there are several reasons. The reason lies on that global warming seems like a hoax to people, it doesn’t seem real. I believe the reason why is because global warming doesn’t happen right at the moment, and people tend to react when they are actually experiencing the effects. But once again even with seeing actual photos the community still doesn’t react. Why is that? I believe people don’t truly understand global warming. If our community has more knowledge of global warming and its effects people would find ways to prevent it. As our technology advances, global warming gets worse. Such as getting luxury cars that pollute our air. Scientists have determined that a number of human activities are contributing to global warming by adding excessive amounts of greenhouse gases to the atmosphere. Greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide accumulate in the atmosphere and trap heat that normally would exit into our outer space. The consequences of global warming are that As the concentration of greenhouse gases grows, more heat is trapped in the atmosphere and less escapes back into space. This increase in trapped heat changes the climate and alters weather patterns, which may hasten species extinction, influence the length of seasons, cause coastal flooding, and lead to more frequent and severe storms. Which is way we need to put our voice and inform our communities; with that I’m sure we could find a way to reduce the effects of global warming.

  21. We sometimes forget that this planet had a climate long before we showed up and started noticing it and then eventually affecting it but let's be clear the climate of this planet has always been pretty nuts, ice ages, completely iceless ages, volcanic winters, crazy methane and ammonia atmosphere, you name it. Climate is influenced by a whole series of cycles some incredibly long some lasting only a few thousand years. These cycles have been churning along for a hundreds of millions of years and in most cases they will continue long after we are gone.

A look at the history of climate change on earth can give us some much-needed perspective on our current climate dilemma because the surprising truth is that what we are experiencing now is different than anything this planet has encountered before.

Indeed what we are experimenting now is an exponentially fast rise in heat inside the atmosphere of the earth, heat is increasing so fast that in just a hundred years has increased what costed the earth by itself to get in six thousand, before the last ice age cooled everything up. This phenomenon is being caused by a race of super smart animal that live in the surface of earth, yes, I am talking about the humans and yes it is cause by us, even though there are people that do not believe that global warming is caused by human actions in the world.

We have done it by realizing massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, by burning coal, gas, oil, jet fuel etc. and we also like to destroy natural carbon things like the amazon rainforest, and then in the place of those reforests we like to put things that produce more greenhouse gases like cattle. But here is the kicker the earth has seen this massive in carbon dioxide concentrations in our atmosphere in the past and every time it has been a complete disaster, I am talking about extinction here! So friends lets think about that for a second and lets admit that we do not want the human race to get extinct so please do what the people that know tell us to do like using less energy recycling, buying hybrid cars etc. Lets try to prolong the human race a little bit longer until another big and/or maybe faster catastrophe kill us all.

  22. Firstly, it is essential to mark out that the toxic air threatens, as well as the global temperature is an international problem, which should worry each citizen around the globe (Daly, 2013). If “declining global food stocks” and “sea-level rises” affect millions of people, the most effective way is to concentrate on the awareness of the citizens (IRIN, 2012). Firstly, the mass media should put all the efforts to inform people about the problem. Secondly, it is in human nature to protect his own life and close people. Therefore, it is essential to make each citizen aware that not someone else, but he himself and his family and friends are in danger. In addition, the scientist or some other qualified individuals should explain the situation and instruct about the possible ways out, about the exact actions each citizen should take in order to be helpful.
